The problem: I ran a scheduled scan with AVG a few weeks ago and it came up with a hidden driver. I had it clean it, rescanned after reboot, etc. and a few days later (on my next scan) I had another driver- also in system32, but with a different name. Both were just gibberish, as far as I can tell.
I started to prepare for a HjT scan but ended up forgetting to ever actually do it, and along the way Spybot S&D caught a bunch of items and deleted them, and that was pretty much where I stopped because the next day AVG's scan didn't catch anything. Then, yesterday, it came up with another driver, and I redid the prep steps... Spybot, Malwarebites, and Ad-aware all came up clean, and Housecall came up with Joke_agent, I think it was, but it (seems to) have cleaned it up.
I've had Daemon Tools on my computer before, a few months ago, but I thought I'd deleted it- I read that it can create these random drivers, but it isn't on my Add/Remove Programs list and I don't have a program file for it. If that's it, how would I get rid of it?
Another problem I've been having is that a couple times this month my computer's just frozen up completely. I haven't been able to CRTL+ALT+Delete, open the start menu, nothing. Both times ended with me having to actually unplug my computer and start up again, and then the computer goes on its way like nothing happened, and I haven't been able to notice any changes after it freezes... I'm hoping this has to do with the same thing that's causing the hidden driver. (*crosses fingers*)
Also, a little off topic but still computer-y: I know you aren't supposed to have two virus-controls but I've heard of people who have anti-virus and an anti-spyware. Is Spybot's 'Teatimer' anti-spyware? Should I let it stay open when I also have AVG up and running?
Thanks for taking the time to read and responding. Hopefully this won't be too hard to clean up. =)

On top of still having hidden drivers, my computer's been freezing up more often and slugging up to the point where it's almost impossible to work with her some days. I've tried cleaning up the temp files on IE and Mozilla, and they're both set to only hold history for a couple of days, and my scans still come up clean so I can't think of what's wrong, considering I've barely used half of the storage space on my computer... but then I was looking at my start-up list on Spybot Search&Destory, and just from a glance it looks like I have quite a few things I shouldn't- could that slowing it down?

Here's a new htj log, and thanks in advance!

Hello Jackdaw,

What are those hidden drivers? Can you find any information, names in your AVG8 Virus Vault?
----------------------------------------------
Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Symantec
AVG8

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.
----------------------------------------------
REMOVE NORTON

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall Norton.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.

You will need to reboot your pc after you remove Symantec.
----------------------------------------------
This line shows you have a image placed on your desktop.
Did you intentionally put it there? Do you recognise the site name?

----------------------------------------------
Download DDS

Download at your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link1
Link2
Link3
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open a report.
  • The tool will also ask you to create a 2nd report. Please do it.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

Private Messages for personal support will be ignored. If you need help post in the forum.

Thanks, chyrssi, for your reply. =D Hopefully my severe lack of computer savvy won't scare you off.

I'm pretty sure the drivers rename themselves every time I reboot- even when I don't have AVG delete them, they're different on the next scan. Here are the ones I've had so far:

C:WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\af5idfr5.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\a8dhou8q.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aoxapayu.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aq9ucsiu.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\a2zxwyao.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\alk7ire2.SYS
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aodcaike.SYS

-

Gah, I swear I deleted Norton like three years ago- it's gone now, though.

-

I recognize the image- it's one of my IE bookmarks. I don't actually see it on my desktop, though.

Hello Jackdaw,

I recognize the image- it's one of my IE bookmarks. I don't actually see it on my desktop, though.

Ok we'll remove it then.
----------------------------------------------
I have a lot of instructions here. If you have problem or do not understand how to do something, do not proceed, but please come back and ask.
----------------------------------------------
P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun...protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you choose not to remove them, please do not use them until this computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
AWS

----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...&pf=desktop
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.live365.com << No reason for this to be in your trusted Zone, even if you deliberately put it there.
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs7/i/2005/177/8...crestfallen.jpg

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page").
Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\Program Files\AWS

Right-click and remove it.

Using the same way find this Folder:

C:\Program Files\Java

Double-click to open it and remove:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u7/index.html
  • Click on Download JRE
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
----------------------------------------------
Download and run Combofix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this topic if you need help to disable your protection programs.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:

I don't see Azureus on my Add/Remove Programs list- I know for sure that I uninstalled it (or I suppose tried to, if it's actually still there) ages ago.

-

J2SE Runtime Envirotnment 5.0 Updates 3 and 6, and Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 all removed. AWS wasn't on the list, though.

-

HJT fixes completed- apparenlty, the 'http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs7/i/2005/177/8...crestfallen.jpg' was actually my background image, whoops!

-

The only item under start > etc. > web tab was My Current Home Page, and that was already unchecked, so I left it as is.

-

Deleted AWS; however, the Java folder didn't have any of the files/folders listed, which I take to be a good thing.

Also, I noticed folders for Azureus and Daemon Tools (the program I thought might be causing the drivers but couldn't find in Add/Remove). I didn't mess with the latter two, but would you like me to?

-

Got to the point with the Combofix tutorial where the Windows Recovery Console was just dragged onto the Combofix icon.. I got the little Combofix loading bar like in the animation, but no prompt about the WRC being installed.
I'm probably just being a worry-wart, but I dont' want to go on just to find out that it wasn't really installed and my computer's screwed over. It probably just means I already had it installed, right? I don't know how to actually tell whether or not I do.

(Thanks again for your help. =D)

Hello Jackdaw,

I don't see Azureus on my Add/Remove Programs list- I know for sure that I uninstalled it (or I suppose tried to, if it's actually still there) ages ago

When we uninstall a program, the programs folder stays always behind.

You will need to go and remove it from here:
(purple~1 is a users name-you should know all the name, as it doesn't show in your reports)

c:\documents and settings\purple~1\application data\Azureus << This is the only place i can see it from your reports.

Also remove any other Azureus folder you found, since you have uninstalled the program long time ago.

If you still have Daemon Tools on the pc, do not remove the folder.

Probably you already have Recovery console installed.

What did you do? Didn't Combofix asked you if you wanted to scan your pc?

Anyway, please follow the rest of my instructions, and double click to run Combofix.

Remember to go off Internet and disable your protection programs before running Combofix.

Do not touch anything untill it finishes. Then post back the report, together with a new HijackThis log.

Nothing happened- the little loading bar just disappeared and I shut down the computer for the night after a few minutes of nothing. Combofix (seems to?) have had no trouble creating a restore point, though, so it's all good.
Here are the logs:

Hello Jackdaw,

After you use my instructions to disable Spybot's Tea Timer you should reboot as the last part in my instruction says:

Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Use the tool below:
----------------------------------------------
Reset Teatimer

Right click HERE and select "save as" and save it to your desktop
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat.

When we are done, you will have to set Tea-Timer again.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Private Messages for personal support will be ignored. If you need help post in the forum.

Yeah- the Advanced mode>tools>uncheck 'Resident' stays off, but the toolbar rightclick>uncheck 'Resident' resets. ._.'' I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't figure out what I"m doing wrong- and the resetTeaTimer saves as a .txt even if I change the Save As to 'All Files' and not text document- am I missing something?

-

I don't normally use IE so this might have been happening all along, but when I start the program it loads my homepage like normal, but freezes up if I try to type in a URL or click on a bookmark, so I can't run the Kaspernsky Scanner. ._.' Also, the computer's started completely freezing up when I log into my account. It'll load the toolbar and all like normal, but if I try to open anything or right-click on the toolbar, everything stops (even the clock)... I had to unplug three or four times just to get here to tell you this. ^^; Here's my HjT (if nothing freezes along the way.. oh, dear.)
