Should you shut the computer off before plugging or unplugging phone line?

It shouldn't matter, but as a habit I turn off the computer before I make any physical changes, it's a good habit to get into.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure. I was cleaning another computer and would switch back and from one to the other to go online for some downloads. Thanks for reply.

Most dialup modems have both line and phone connectors, you could use a second cord to go out of the phone connector to the line of the other modem. Just be sure that the modem is off on the one not being used to get online.
