I can say with 99.9% certainty that it came from ytmnd.com.

The page was very slow to load and once it did, Windows did an uncommanded shutdown and restart. Upon restarting, Google results pages in IE looked odd, the text appeared slightly different and search results all redirected to unrelated retail sites.

A quick process check showed some unusual processes and upon killing them, they just respawned. Running msconfig showed brastk.exe in the startup tab which I unchecked. (along with everything else) I then rebooted into safe mode but was unable to run any scanning applications. (HJT, Windows Defender, Etc) No error messages, just nothing happened when you tried to run them.

I did a bit of research and found the following files to delete:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\beep.sys
C:\Windows\System32\brastk.exe
C:\Windows\System32\karna.dat

After deleting them and rebooting back into safe mode I was able to run HJT and using the analyzer on hijackthis.de, I found 3 items which were flagged as nasty.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [brastk] C:\WINDOWS\system32\brastk.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [brastk] C:\WINDOWS\system32\brastk.exe (User 'Default user')
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: karna.dat

I removed them and WD, Adaware, SBS&D didn't pick anything up after that. I cleared my cache, temp files and recycling bin and then rebooted. Upon a normal windows load, the exact same thing happened that occured when I first got the infection including the uncommanded shut down/restart.

At that point I decided to get some help rather than risk causing more harm than good.

Your help is massively appreciated. Thanks.

Hello cgrant26,

You are still heavily infected.

HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself. If you do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix entries using HijackThis without consulting an malware expert on using this program.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure.

This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program.
If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. It is not necessary to reboot to get the items to show up in HijackThis.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

Important Note to Other Users Reading this Topic: The instructions provided in this topic below this point are for the original topic starter only. I was able to remove most of the infection using HJT, Malwarebytes, Mark Russinovich's Autostart tool and the usual battery of spyware scanners. All the obvious symptoms are gone however I followed your advice and indeed MWB caught an item that didn't show up until checking all the startup items in msconfig.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u10-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Let make sure there is not more malware lurking.

Download and Run RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Select Files and Folders created in last 1 month
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized).
info.txt can also be found at c:\RSIT\info.txt

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.
