OK, so, here's the synopsis of what occurred:
My mom needs Microsoft Word 2003 for her work. She has Office 95, an upgrade of Word 97, and an upgrade of Word 2003. The Word 2003 upgrade requires Word 97 or newer to be installed.
So, we installed Office 95 with no problem, but much to our dismay, Word 97 simply refused to install. We played with all the compatibility options and even tried copying the install files to the hard drive, but nothing worked. To this moment, I think it's impossible.
My mom read that Word 2003 would work, however, if we installed it while a Works installation was on the PC. So, we installed Works 7 and then ran the Word 2003 set-up. However, it, too, stalled on installation.
After Office 95 was installed, apparently a restart was necessary, and it didn't prompt us to do so.
Moral of the story: If it doesn't work, restart your computer.
