Ok I hope I’m in the right place now…after many hours of scanning as directed in the Bleeping prep guide which included:
- Current version of AV (Norton)
- AdwarePro
- Spybot
- Panda
- Stinger
- Malware bytes (Malware was the tool that I think finally gave me the fix)
- & HyjackThis

Things have almost come back to normal but I’m posting my most recent HJL in the hopes someone smart can tell if there’s anything left behind that I should be cleaning up?

Just for recap, the initial symptoms were:
- Message screen coming up saying I had Win32/Privacy .m64 & Win32 Adware .Vitumonde (seems to be gone)
- loss of program icons on DT (still gone)
- blue screen replaced DT image (still blue)
- loss function from Start button including Programs, control panel, log off, my computer etc.. (all have come back)
- major amount of popups (seemed to have gone)
- redirects to “insecure internet activity” every time a new page launched (not happening anymore)

Thanks to all the info & instruction posted on Bleeping things are getting better!

Hi,

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Did you download Combofix.exe to your desktop? Because you may not run it directly from the link. You have to download it to your desktop (and nowhere else) first and run it from there.

Hi, I’ve run Combofix (log below) and everything seems to be working again, even my desktop program icons have come back. As instructed I’ve also included a recent HJT log below…please let me know if I’m now clean or if there’s anything that I need to do further. Thanks again, the help here is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

We're not finished yet. There are still a few leftovers we have to deal with...

First of all, please uninstall AdwarePro first, because this one is NOT the legitimate AdAware by lavasoft, but a fake version. Reboot after uninstalling.
Then...

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSVolume.dll
Folder::
C:\Program Files\AdwarePro
Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AdwareProMFCT"=-

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Yes, it's indeed a malicious one, that's why I disabled above url.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java™ 6 Update 5
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Then * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
