Hi, I foolishly downloaded what appeared to be a codec to listen to some music and now i have a hidden threat that keeps throwing out Vundo, Generic PUP.x, tibs-packed, VBS/FakeAlert-AB trojans. I've cleaned them up with McAfee but everytime i do scan, they try to throw some more out. I would really appreciate some help.

Hello Noogie05,

My name is Mas_pogi(mark,mp) and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.
As I am still in training I will be helping you under supervision of our expert teachers, so there may be a delay between posts.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you still need help, please follow the instruction below;
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
With Regards,
mas_pogi

Hi Mas, thankyou so much for responding. I hope my log won't be too challenging, and if so, that you get something out of it. Take as much time as you need. You've been faster than anybody else so I'm happy. Here are my logs.

hi Noogie.

Please bear with me as we clean your machine.

PLease follow the steps below;
  • Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Limewire). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

  • Your Java is out of date.[/b] Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows".
    • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
    • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

    Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

    x:\a.exe
    x:\start.exe

x is any drive of your USB.

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

    • Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
      • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
      • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
      • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
      • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.
  • Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

  • Run ESET Online Scan

Please do an online scan with ESET Online Scanner. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.
    • Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click on the Start button next to it.
    • When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
    • You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
    • Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
    • After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
    • Uncheck (untick) Remove found threats box.
    • Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
    • Click on Scan.
    • It will start scanning. Please be patient.
    • Once the scan is done, the log will be saved here: C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt.

In your reply, please post the result of MBAM, result of jotti and result of ESET scanner.

Thanks.

Mark

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the warning, I will uninstall Limewire when everything is clean. I couldn't do the Jotti because the USB drives that relate to the a.exe and start.exe belonged to my friends. I didn't have these programs before until they plugged it into my laptop. Here are the other 2 logs though, i hope they're enough.

No problem. If you can't find them, it is ok.

Lets continue.

Please follow the instructions below;
  • Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 10...allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows" (OR if you are on a x64 system, "Windows x64")
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs (Or "Uninstall a Program" on Vista) and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe (Or jre-6u10-windows-x64.exe for x64 systems)
    • Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
    • Run random's system information tool (RSIT) again from your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
How's your computer?

Hi Mark,

I've uninstalled all the old java versions downloaded and installed the new java update, i accidentally installed the development kit last time, sorry  I ran RSIT and it only popped up the HJT Log, the info.txt wasn't max or minimised so i've included the copy from C:\rsit folder. The computer is a tad quicker and I haven't had any warnings or the like from the anti-virus like before which is great, thankyou so much. I can't believe my anti-virus didn't pick up on the trojans in my music, especially when I scanned those files specifically. Things is though, ever since I used the ESET in IE, it takes longer for my firefox to load. Anyway, here are my logs.

hi Noogie.

I will just want to make sure that you are really clean.

Please follow the instructions below.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks.

Hey Mark,

At the instant i read your reply, my anti-virus detected Tibs-Packed trojan and removed it. Several times after, it happened again, and those times the computer was idle. They were found in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{833B1384-3299-4E3A-84B4-DD52666218F63}\RP169\A0014553.exe, A0014554.exe, A0014555.exe etc. So computer is totally clean yet, woulda fooled me. Here is the combofix log, sorry it took so long to reply. Also, a quick and amateur question, those mp3 files that were infected, or just files in general, if I just delete them, will the infection be deleted as well?

Ummm not really, thankyou so much for your time and effort, i really appreciate it. I think what you're doing is admirable because not many would take time out of their lives to help ignorant and naive people like us. Just a quick question, i'm a tad annoyed how my anti-virus didn't pick up on it, is there an anti-virus you recommend? Thanks again. Just a quick question though, what anti-virus would you recommend since mine kinda missed it?

Hi.

Since there is no more other issue, please wait for my final instructions.

Actually, there is no 100% percent efficient Anti virus. Somewhere and somehow, they gonna miss something.
Since we know the reality, we will do something to prevent ourselves of getting infected.
Like reevaluations of our internet habits, are our OS are fully patch. Things like that.

Your internet security now is ok. No need to change it unless it rans out of license.
I am using free Avast and Free Comodo Firewall.
