When I try to download new extensions for firefox, it goes to the page to install, the I click ok, but then it doesn't go to download it. Also, if I go to tools and then entensions, it doesn't open. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? Also note that an hourglass shows up for a second (waiting to open) then goes away. The download and themes categories windows under tools still work as well.

This is odd. Now I can download extensions, although I don't see them downloading? It still will not allow me to turn on/off extensions through tools>extensions. It puts the hourglass next to the cursor like it is trying but stops when I move the cursor.

Have you closed, and then re-opened Firefox?
You have to do this before the extension will work.

Yep, did that too. The extensions window still will not open to allow me to turn on/off extensions. I would think that the downloads and themes windows, which are similar, would not open if extensions didn't, but they still open fine.

When you did a reinstall, did you also search for the Profile folder and delete it?
This file is not removed when you uninstall Firefox from Add/Remove. It will retains all of your previous settings, and re-applys them to your new install, if not deleted.

Uninstall your current version from Add/Remove programs.
Then go to C: / Program files, and delete the Mozilla Firefox folder.

Set windows to show hidden files,
How to see hidden files in Windows
then navigate to:

C:\ Documents and Settings \ "your user name" \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles
Delete this folder (or send it to the Recycle Bin as a backup), and then try reinstalling Firefox.

I've been reading of people having problems with extensions, in the latest version of Firefox (1.0.3).
All I can suggest is to uninstall, clean out the left over files, reinstall, and stay away from the extensions for awhile, untill they get the bugs worked out.
Are the extensions compatible with the latest version of Firefox?
You might try installing one extension at a time and run it for a week to see if it causes any problems.
If not, add another one.
It could be just one of them causing the problem.

What extensions are you trying to get?
I use BBCode, IEView, Weatherfox, and an old version of ChatZilla, with no problems.

One more thing.
When you do a reinstall, do you download a fresh program from the site, or do you install from an executable you have saved to your harddrive?
If it's from a saved one, it could be corrupt.
Delete it and download a fresh copy and see if that works.

I don't know what else to try, dan8402.
Post back with your results.

No matter what I try to do, the preferences will not go away when I delete all of the files relating to firefox that I can find. What I am trying to fix is the tabbed browsing plugin that I got which I do not really want any longer. Since I can't get the extensions window to open, I can't turn it off let alone get rid of it.

I don't know what the problem could be.
If you deleted this folder:
C:\ Documents and Settings \ "your user name" \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles
you shouldn't have any previous preferences saved.

Maybe someone else will have a suggestion.
Sorry dan8402, but I'm all out of ideas.

I don't know what the problem was either, but I tried to fix it one last time, and it worked. My last question is how would I go about importing my old Internet Explorer favorites to the Firefox Bookmarks tab since I lost them with deleting the user profile? Thanks a lot for your help tg1911.

Straight from the Firefox Extension download page, there are user reviews. This one pretty much enlightened me as to why I had a problem:

Deinstall Error

by 514, May 02, 2005 7:29am

DO NOT press the internal "deinstall" It will stop the extentions box from opening.

Looks like I should read everything before trying to figure it out myself.
