I am running a pc game ' vietcong ' original discs and when attempting to run the game norton internet security 2009 blocks the operation reporting a trojan callled backdoor.ranky.
Why?

MY guess is you may have an infection that Norton has not picked up on?
What is your OS, what other protection is on there and when last run on full deep scans?

Get a second opinion. Go to jotti's virusscan or virustotal.com. In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file(s) and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis.
-- Post back with the results of the file analysis.
