I'm on a Dell laptop wirelessly connected to my home internet. I'm running Windows XP.
A few days ago, I noticed a big red X hanging out in the lower right hand corner of my screen (by the clock, I can't remember what that area is called, haha). Every six seconds or so, it will pop up saying "YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recomended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss.Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date- antispyware for you."
Now that is word for word, and all the misspellings aren't mine! haha. Now if you click on it, it begins to download "antivirus xp 2008" which I know is probably a very bad thing.
Also, it has changed my Desktop Background to a blue screen warning me to download this and update that. I've been running Avira and I have no idea how to get rid of this thing.
A few other things I have noticed is that I will randomly hear ads when my computer is sitting there, untouched with no way to turn it off, it's just sound coming from what seems like no where. I am constantly getting Internet Explorer pop-ups, though I use Firefox as my default browser. I am also experiencing slow speeds and random shut downs.
This is just, UGH. I am so frustrated with it, can anyone PLEASE help me!
Thank so much.
Oh and If I posted this in the wrong area, I'm sorry as I am new. Thanks again.
Below is a picture of whats going on, just on my desktop.
Fake windows security, the red X pop-up I described. Another pop-up about Spyware. And some file called "Delself" I delete it and it comes back...
