I ran a scan today and noticed the expl0rer.exe file, which I hadn't seen before. So I downloaded Hijackthis, and here's the log.

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, please be sure you have read and followed the
Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/
All advice given is taken at your own risk.

I apologize for the wait, if your issues are not resolved, read the instructions posted above and then follow the directions below. If you no longer need help, I would appreciate a quick post letting me know so I can close your topic. The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IeServerhelp] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\EXPL0RER.EXE
http://www.systemlookup.com/Startup/3490.html <<< looks like this, I am not 100% sure what the hacker is after but you can be sure they are up to no good. You may want to view this information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

If you prefer to reformat, just let me know, I will understand.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback...

1) Please remove (delete) SDFix from your computer.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

3) Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Please continue as follows:

1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Thanks

That might have done the trick, as I don't see that EXP0RER.exe anymore.

Thanks for returning your information, let's proceed like this.

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\ <<< this program is obsolete:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-an...nd-anti-rootkit
Since you are using Sophos and I don't see Grisoft being used, I suggest you uninstall that folder.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to AVG Anti-Spyware Guard and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized
O23 - Service: AVG Anti-Spyware Guard - GRISOFT s.r.o. - C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\ <<< delete that folder

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks...Phil

Everything seems to be fine, although I've noticed my nemesis is back in the Hijackthis log.

I don't know if this is relevant but I thought I'd mention it. I'm in grad school, and I found out the University has a site license for Sophos and allows us to use it on our personal computers, so I installed that. I've run a couple of scans with it, and it quarantines something (I can't remember the name off the top of my head, something like Mal/Basine-53 I think), and it gives the location as "Memory" and says that manual removal is required, although Sophos doesn't give removal instructions, as such, but rather says to send them a sample of the quarantined file, and contact their support. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Cully

It's very likely TeaTimer's memory is keeping those items in the HJT log, let's find out like this.

I must assume you are using a infected USB or Flash drive:

C:\ielp.exe <<< see this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=i...mp;aq=f&oq=

I will remove all mountpoints, you need to reformat the removable media you have been using.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/231100/Reformatting-a-USB-Drive
If this is a Flash drive, let me know, I have a tool to disinfect it.

1) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\ielp.exe
G:\ielp.exe
E:\Setup.exe
F:\LaunchU3.exe -a
I:\LaunchU3.exe -a
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\EXPL0RER.EXE

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\C]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\E]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\G]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\I]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{e156cff0-bdeb-11db-800c-000d3aa5bac2}]

Save this as CFScript

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IeServerhelp] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\EXPL0RER.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware] C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe /install /silent
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Post the log from CFScript and a new HJT log, tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

I forgot to save the ComboFix log, so I don't have it. I do remember that it said it couldn't delete E:\Setup.exe because it couldn't find it, E is a DVD drive. I ran Hijackthis, but these two files weren't there:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware] C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe /install /silent
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -

So, I just checked the first one, and fixed it.

I ran the TeaTimerReset file, and I still have TeaTimer disabled for the moment.

And I reformated the H drive.

Here's the Hijackthis log after all this was done:

Thanks for returning that information and the feedback. I first want to suggest that you consider an update to Internet Explorer 7 (soon to be 8) if just for the additional security it give you.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ie/default.mspx

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
