Folks,

I have Windows Media which came with the computer. Came with an analog tv tuner, all built in when purchased, so I have been using it to watch tv on the computer whilst I work (in the UK).

Had a few problems just lately with trojans etc. but managed to get rid thanks to your help but that seems to have led to a few niggles.

When I start up Windows Media now it starts as usual and goes to the options....I click on 'live tv' as usual and the tv video box pops up same as usual but then it says 'video error' in the tv box and locks up. I then have to use ctr-alt-del to stop the program. I've tried windows update etc. but nothing seems to fix it. I've run Norton System works and it's coming up with no errors.

I miss my tv! I'm not particularly computer literate, any tips and help would be appreciated.

Hi .

I have 3/4 TV tuner cards (which I installed).

The tuner is the hardware part of the equation, but I have always used additiional programs to view/record TV.

I think you are a bit confused...WMP has no capability for recording or viewing video/TV...but Windows Movie Maker does.

I suspect that you have a Media Center Edition TV, which would account for what you state is the normal way things work. You can verify this by clicking Start, right-clicking on My Computer...select Propties. This will result in a screen that will tell you what version of XP you are running on your system.

Any details for the video error? Any explanation?

You can check Event Viewer for errors indicating a software problem.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/

You are looking for errors on the Application tab that occur at approximately the same time that you experience problems.

Hamluis,

'Tis indeed a Windows Media Center edition.

I just tried again and before the 'video error' title popped up in the tv box it said something like 'some files are missing or corrupted, Media may not work properly' or something like that. It didn't, however, offer any solutions....

I've cut and pasted the three application errors that occurred at the time, as follows:

Usama,

Under properties I have 'service pack 3' installed. There are no 'express' or 'custom' updates available when I search. Looks like I have the latest XP update.....however, come to think of it, the problem may well have started after the last update....I have also permanently lost my desktop background, no matter what I do, but that can wait for another day.....

Try one or two of these free, online scans to ensure that something hasn't snuck past your protection (the missing desktop is sometimes a symptom of a malware infection).

(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)

If it turns out you're infected (or none of the scans will run/complete), I'd suggest posting over in the Am I Infected forum for some expert assistance: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/
If not, post back here and we'll try some more stuff.

Luis, Usasma,

Successfully downloaded the free Panda software....no bugs reported. Perhaps the problem is indeed the link referred to by Luis.

Still can't get any background at all, whatever I do, which is perplexing and annoying.

Best wishes,

Nicholas

Dunno if this link will help (haven't tried it myself), but it's helped others. Just FYI, it's alpha software (not even beta), so backup your stuff and your registry before trying it. http://blogs.msdn.com/peterrosser/archive/.../20/482974.aspx
