Hello all, i anxiously wait for some ideas about this. Yesterday my Verizon firewall started popping up messages saying "blocked xxxxxx.exe from accessing internet." (xxxxx=numerous different names)
I've done all of the following from safe mode, but still this thing keeps rearing it's ugly head.
SuperAnitSpyware
Malwarebytes
SpybotS&D
Combo Fix

Here's my hijackthis log
Please Help!

Hello vthokieod,

Sorry for the delay. Overloaded here.

Due to the time lapse I will need an updated scan to assess your present situation.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Manners are the basis of a civilized society and make everyone's lives just a little happier. They cost nothing but they are worth so much.

Hi vthokieod,

I overlooked mentioning in the last post the instruction to ensure e-mail notification.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Manners are the basis of a civilized society and make everyone's lives just a little happier. They cost nothing but they are worth so much.

Thanks for the reply. I found an online scan at the suggestion of a friend - F Secure. That scan actually found 3 more viruses that the other scans missed. Not sure how, but Malware, Spybot, bitdefender, combofix, and superantispyware all missed them. It SEEMS that the system is clean, with the exception that my firewall keeps telling me there are dropped packets--not sure what that's about, but i would appreciate any advice. here's the logs you requested. Thanks, again!

Hello again vthokieod,

Nothing much that I can see in the way of malware. Some questionable things, some orphans to remove and some old vulnerable programs to replace.

Firstly though: You tell me that you ran ComboFix and I see it in your logs.

Rather risky that, in fact some would say silly to have run ComboFix without supervision. It is a very powerful program and can, sometimes does, run into conflict on a computer rendering it unusable. Also I see you ran it in Safe mod. It actually works better run in normal mod. Enough said, we will have to remove it though at the end because if we leave it, it can cause problems for you down the track.

Question: I see you have Authentium anti-virus running in real time along side Norton Symantec. Is the Authentium there for a particular reason, for example to just cover financial transactions?

The reason I ask is that running two real time anti-virus programs results in conflict and can cause problems with the running of your machine and at the same time reducing protection to little or nothing.

Moving on.

In this post we will update your vulnerable programs, remove some orphans and attend to some questionable programs. Then run a scan to check for residual infection.

Your Java is out of date, older versions are vunerable to attack.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
-----Step 2-----

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vunerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Now

You have a Kaboodle toolbar. Kaboodle collects information from users including email address, username, password, bookmarks and associated content stored by the user, messages, IP address, browser data, and cookies.

You have Viewpoint which also collects information for marketing purposes.

In my view these are questionable programs. Up to you whether you want to keep them though.

If you decide to remove Viewpoint go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall.

For Kaboodle, I will include it for removal below. Just don't check it in the HJT if you want to keep it.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Thanks for the instructions. I've followed them and here is some info....
* OTMoveIt3 log
* Kaspersky scan results
* a fresh HijackThis log
* and tell me about your anti-virus programs

Kapersky scan was clean.
I have tried to uninstall viewpoint before, and it didn't come out clean. Not sure what to do about this, but when I go to the add/remove programs it isn't listed.

Antivirus programs: Currently I only have one running that I'm aware of. I do have a copy of Norton System Works, but I don't have the antivirus active, i uninstalled that a long time ago. Since then I moved to zonealarm, uninstalled that and am currently using a suite of software that Verizon packages for their users. It could very well be that it's Authentium, I have no idea.

Hi vthokieod,

Viewpoint showed up as a service in your first log but has disappeared now so I think you must have dealt to it. One thing you might do is to go to Start > Search and run a search for Viewpoint. Delete any folders or files that show up.

Now the anti-virus programs:

Symantec, Verizon and Authentium all show as processes running on your machine. Because of the conflict problems I mentioned earlier, my recommendation would be to uninstall Symantec and Authentium. You should be able to do this via Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

After you have done that you should run the Norton removal tool to get rid of the bits and pieces left behind when you uninstall Symantec.

Go here Norton Removal Tool to remove left over bits of the Norton AntiVirus Program. Choose the link for the version you had and then download and run the removal progam.

When you have carried out the above please run HijackThis and post a new log back here.

Any questions?
