Hi

I don't know if anyone can help me - my partner was on a site earlier and he noticed the loading bar was still running even though the site was complete. He stopped, exited, and shut down the computer, which then tried to reboot itself. When he manually forced it to switch off, and turned it on again, another screen came up with unusual options before the desktop loaded. Since then we have a windows error message saying we have spyware, which we think is fake and will probably try and direct us to a pay-for remover site or some such thing. There is even a spelling mistake on it! We are also getting a lot of windows security pop ups - for trojan-downloader.win32.agent.bq, and a delself icon has appeared on the desktop.

I have run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, ATF-Cleaner and SUPERAntispyware, but they are still there. Should I post logs here?

Thanks LOTS for any help.

hey hey!

Well all the things have gone - the delself icon, the warnings, etc - but IE keeps shutting down on me. That's why I'm keeping this short - third time lucky! Shall I run ATF and SASW again now I've used the updated MBAM?

Everything seems to be running ok now - there were lots popups coming up earlier and they seem to have gone - and IE hasn't crashed on me since we've done the scan. So fingers crossed! Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks so much for your help, it's much appreciated.

You're very welcome if things look good then...

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok"
  • Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.

Thanks - have found one pop up in particular is still coming through, and IE has shut itself down a few times, although not as much as before. I should hold off on the above step until everything is ok, right?
