Hi again,

Am cleaning up my sister's virus/spyware ridden pc - successfully ran avg, adaware, spybot S&D, and isntalled spyware blaster and ZoneAlarm Free. Am using Firefox instead of IE.

Seems to be much better, though still not quite right - (slow, some freezing etc.) and cannot install windows updates (She's still on SP1 and probably a bit out of date)- Either from the control panel, or if I go though Firefox straight to any microsoft update site - I get an Alert box
"The Connection Was refused when attempting to contact windowsupdate.microsoft.com"
I get this message for all sorts of microsoft 'sub-sites' and others like trendmicro.com.

Could you please help me sort this out, and at the same time help me clean up my log - eg. Norton is in the HJL but no longer exists as a program on my machine, and every time I start up, HP seems to run some sort of install program etc.etc... I'm afraid to delete cause I don't quite know what I'm doing in the registry.

Many many thanks, as usual....

Delete c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Click on start, settings, control panel and double-click on add/remove programs. From with add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist:

Preview AdService

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Preview AdService] C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\PrevAdServ.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoLoaderwF0N1dPSPQaa] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\ftsccr32.exe"
O12 - Plugin for .spop: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins\NPDocBox.dll

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ftsccr32.exe

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Thanks for such a prompt response, really appreciate it.

Did as you asked -
- Uninstaller error when I tried to remove PreviewAdService from add-remove. But answered yes when asked if want to remove it from the list
- HJL entries all fixed
- rebooted. found the first of the 2 files to delete.

Meanwhile, quirks still happening:
- Windows update now gets to the point where you can choose express or custom install, but when express is selected, it comes up with an error 0x8024402C, which in the help/troubleshooting suggests it's a proxy problem of sorts... This is just a standalone PC, on dial-up access, with no Proxy exceptions etc as far as I can tell...
- Sending yahoo email from outlook express never arrives at destination - no
error during send/receive.
- outlook just crashes immediately after it's started
- when turning off computer, always get 'hpcmpmgr.exe' still running and have to
end-task.
- takes ages to start up, including windows installer still installs HPAll-in-One every time computer is turned on.

Many thnks as usual,
new HJT below

Please run two online virus scans:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400#betatest

Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

In terms of running an online scan, I tried right at the beginning to run trendmicro housecall. Because it's dial up, it took hours just to download the latest virus definitions and I gave up. Do you have any other suggestions other than an online scan, and if not, are there any parts of the computer that can be eliminated from the scan so it doesn't take that long...

many thx

V.strange.... Karpenski gets to the first page, then when we hit Launch button it just sais Done, and does nothing. Next time we tried, we got a RunTime error has occured. I went back and reset all default internet explorer settings, tried again, just got Done and no response. Meanwhile, IE does respond to other web addresses I type in.

sorry not to have better news....
