I just installed XP Home on a new computer. I believe Avast and AVG are the two most popular free scanners and Kerio, ZoneAlarm and Comodo are the most popular free firewalls. I know I need one firewall and one scanner. Which of each should I choose? Thanks for any replies.

Because potentially you could get endless opinions on which one is considered the best, ultimately the decision will be up to you as to which ones are the best on your computer. You should trial & error any combination of the ones you mentioned above & see which work for you. Having said that, you can use the following as guides to help in your selection.

For your AV, go here: AV-Comparatives

For your Firewall, go here: Matousec Firewall Challenge

For ultimate protection, i reccommend SpywareDoctor 6 starter,Norton IS 2009 and Norton Antibot (using all and all was fine)

It is probably trial and error; however, neither Norton nor AVG8.0 are programs I will have on any of my computers ; I have only bad experiences with both

but it is your computer and your choice

I use comodo firewal 3, avast, and threat fire because I'm crazy. But none of them have ever dected anything. So, I would stick with comodo, it works good, for me atleast.
