The most frequent reason why an exposed wireless access point such as this would drop signal randomly would be that another device in the area is using the same 2.4 gHz frequency that the wireless signal is using. Check to make sure any cordless telephones are not near the computers at all, or any other wireless devices that may interfere. If not, this may be a grounding problem as you have suggested.
