Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You are showing more than one running instance of HJT. Please be sure to use ONLY the one you have in D:\Virus Tools\HijackThis.exe, and delete the one in C:\Temp\hjt\HijackThis.exe before you proceed. If there is a backup folder in C:\Temp\hjt\HijackThis.exe, please move it to D:\Virus Tools\HijackThis.exe before you delete.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is checked under the 'Hidden Files and Folders' section. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside 'Hide file extensions for known file types' or 'Hide protected operating system files'.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Please download Ad-aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.exe Do not run it yet.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Click Download Updates, let it finish. Close the program now.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\WINNT\system32\sdktl32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wineg.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\vinth.dll/sp.html#93256

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wineg.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\wineg.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\sdktl32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\wineg.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\vinth.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\nthe.dll

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Run CWShredder. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Run Adaware and fix everything that it finds.

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Let's continue on with the fix...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

For the options that you checked/enabled, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).
===============

Download the Backdoor Agent cleanup utility from Symantec and follow the instructions on their page.

===============

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11F#`I) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

==============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

popuper.exe*
msole32.exe*
intmonp.exe*
mfcth.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINNT\popuper.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\mfcth.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u apihp32.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B6BC89AC-55D7-123F-064A-CAEE71479D55} - C:\WINNT\system32\apihp32.dll

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11F#`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\crgy32.exe (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINNT\popuper.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\mfcth.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\apihp32.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\crgy32.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINNT\addmd32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\d3th.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u addaz32.dll
regsvr32 /u syskd.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6EDC0091-D8EA-F52C-312C-A6C8D0E13C0D} - C:\WINNT\system32\addaz32.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C6847B7A-38C3-4542-366D-CBA5E89AE880} - C:\WINNT\system32\syskd.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ipli32.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\ipli32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [addmd32.exe] C:\WINNT\addmd32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [d3th.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\d3th.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINNT\addmd32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\d3th.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\addaz32.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\syskd.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ipli32.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msmsgs.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

I sorry i forgot to mention in my last post that the following has also happened as a result of all this. My desktop has been hijacked as well and displays the following.

security warning
a fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:c0011e36 in vxd vmm(01) =
00010e36. error was cazused by trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c

* system can not function in normal mode.
please check you security settings.

* Scan your pc with any avaliable anti virus / spyware remover program
to fix problem.

The system seems to run fine, except i'm unable to get rid of this screen as my desktop & screensaver tabs are now missing in display properties.

I'm runnig windows 2000 pro, all the latest security patchs. p4 2.4 ghz 1gb ram.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Download the following reg file by right-clicking on the link and choosing Save As. Save this file to your Desktop.

Smitfraud Fix Reg File

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.

Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it.

Post a new HJT log, also, please, as well as a report of your PC's condition after the reg fix

I'll be out of town for a week or so, so I'll not be able to try these latest fixes till then. I was wondering if we can this keep thread active till then. Thanks for your efforts so far.
