Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

I'm having trouble installing the Recovery Console
I never slipstreamed SP2 into the XP disk and I'm getting the error:
"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD."

I tried the manual installation from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

I went to the MS site and I believe I downloaded the correct onr for XP Pro w/SP2
I open the download and a DOS window opens up wanting to specify the floppy drive to copy the images to

What am I doing wrong

Sorry about that. I find that many Users have trouble with those instructions. Please give these a try, I think they might be clearer.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Posted Image

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

After the Recovery Console has been installed

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

In my haste to run Combofix after I finally installed the Recovery Console, I forgot to turn off my virus and malware tools. I then turned them off and reran the scan. I added the original scan as an attachment in case you need it to compare anything

Hello,

There may be one more ComboFix log on your computer.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following folders:

C:\qoobox

In that folder you will find the ComboFix log files, ComboFix.txt.

Please post the contents of the oldest log file in your next reply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download CCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.

Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post the "oldest" ComboFix log along with the Kaspersky log, a fresh HijackThis log and a description of how your computer is behaving.

Hi,

Please run this CFScript

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

KILLALL::

SnapshotB::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Check your ZoneAlarm Firewall

Please verify that your ZoneAlarm Firewall is enabled. If it is not, please enable it now.

Please post the ComboFix log along with a fresh HijackThis log. Also let me know how your computer is behaving. Are you having any problems with FireFox or Internet Explorer?

Everything seems to run fine Outlook express is back and connects. Firefox is OK. No icons or listings for Internet Explorer
I click on Windows Update to try and get to the browser that way and it won't connect

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Here is what I would like for you to try...

Step 1:

Go to Start --> Control Panel, then double click Add or Remove Programs.

On the left side of the Add or Remove Programs screen, please click Add/Remove Windows Components,

The Windows Components Wizard screen will now be open.
  • If the box next to Internet Explorer IS NOT checked , place a check mark in that box then click Next. When the Wizard is done doing it's thing, your IE7 shortcuts should be back on the desktop and in the start menu.
  • If the box next to Internet Explorer IS checked, click Cancel to close the Wizard and continue to Step 2.
Step 2:

If Step 1 did not solve the problem, then
Go to Start --> My Computer, then double click the C: drive to open it.
Double click Program Files then Double Click Internet Explorer to open the IE folder.
Look for the IE7 icon, right-click the icon and select Pin to Start Menu.
Right-click the icon again and select Send to --> Desktop (Create Shortcut)
You should now have an icon for IE7 on your desktop and in the start menu.

If the problem is still not resolved, then go to Step 3.

Step 3:

If Steps 1 and 2 did not fix the problem, use Firefox to download IE7 from HERE. Please save it to your desktop.

Note: Please Do NOT download Internet Explorer 8 BETA!

To install IE7, double click the file that you downloaded to your desktop and follow the prompts.

Please let me know if you can now access IE7. How is your computer running now?

Step one got the icons and everything back, but no connection. Should I continue with steps 2 and 3?

No, do not continue with the other Steps.

Please explain what you mean by "no connection". Does the IE7 browser open when you double-click one of the icons? Is it that IE7 opens, but does not connect to the internet?

Also, please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Edit: DUH!! Works now It got disabled in Zone Alarm somehow. What an idiot.
Everything looks OK. I hope we're ready to close this one out
