The driver provided is generic, but it's in exe form. Shouldn't it be in zip form and contain lots of files that can be used to install the device using Device Manager?

Not necessarily, it may be a self extracting archive that will create a folder containing those files, or it may be an installer that directly sets up the drivers and asks permission to restart the system.
