Hey guys!

Strange thing just occurred to my computer. I heard the sound you get when hardware has been disconnected from your computer, and immeidately, my mouse and keyboard (both USB) stopped working.

Now, when I plug the mouse in, the red light at the bottom of the mouse turns on, so I am pretty sure that the USB is providing power to the device although windows doesn't seem to be recognising it.

I tried uninstalling the USB drivers through the device manager, and then do a scan for new hardware, but this did not fix the problem. My hardware is all up to date so I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. All my other USB ports seem to be behaving similarly.

I also tried doing a full cold shutdown with a power cycle but that didn't help as well.

I'm tempted to say that it's a software-related issue with windows.

Any help/suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys

I would uninstall the USB controllers in Device Manager...reboot...install appropriate drivers anew.

You can try system file checker. Start-run-type SFC /SCANNOW, notice space between C and ?, enter. You will need the xp disk.

Tried that, and it caused my computer to go into an infinite reboot loop. I finally managed to get my desktop back by rebooting under last known good configuration.

Dig through here and see if you can find a fix.

System restore to a point before the problem or a system repair.

Tried a system restore, but the problem doesn't seem to be fixed.

Also, for some odd reason, I can't do a system repair since apparently my version of windows is newer than the version on the CD, which is not the case

Don't know what system you have but do you have a mobo cd? If so, try reloading the drivers from it.

My system is custom built. I'm using an Nvidia Nforce 650i Ultra motherboard. I tried the mobo CD to reinstall the drivers. Still doesn't work. I even checked my BIOS to make sure the USB was enabled, which it was.

Sounds like a clean install may be the next step. OR the mobo may have a problem with the usb ports. It may also be a psu. One of the voltage rails may have gone down. Try google to SIW to get a readout on your psu voltages. Or check the bios for voltages.

I checked the voltages and they all seem to be fine (along the order of 1.5V). They look normal to me.

There are 5 rails that vary from 1.5 volts to 12 volts. Read this.
