hi

this all started about 6 months ago with our old dvd writer, where it would randomly crash while burning or trying to read any disc. we didnt know what was wrong with it so we got a new dvd writer/drive. untill about 2 weeks ago it worked fine but now all of a sudden it crashes whenever i try and use it. ive scanned the computer with spyware doctor and ad-aware which picked up a few things which i cleared but the problem remains. Also the computer started to crash randomly during use as well. originally i thought the fans need a clean, which i did today but still no change. i have enabled the computer to come up with BSOD when it crashes but it doesnt appear when it reboots so i guess its something to do with hardware?

Computer specs:
windows xp SP2
661GX-M7 motherboard
intel celeron CPU 3.06GHz
2 GB RAM
Nvidia 256 Geforce 5500x

also in case if this helps the video card i only installed 4 days ago brand new, and yes it has the latest drivers (spore glitched up without the update) and i havent installed anything new or changed anything recently that i can recall of. Oh and another thing on normal xp i couldnt finish a scan with ad-aware since it crashed but in safe mode it finished it so am i looking at 2 different issues here?

crossing my fingers i can find a solution, otherwise my dad wont be overly happy with me

Hi mattyboy93, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

Look in the Event Viewer and see what errors are showing up at the time that this is happening. Each error will have its own date and time shown.

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Event Viewer.

On the right side of the page you will see the options Applications, Security, and Systems, double click on Systems. There are eight columns on this page, the three that you will want are Type, Date, Time, and Event.

The errors will appear in the Type column, they are red dots with a white X inside of them.

Warnings will appear as a yellow trinangle with an exclamation mark inside.

When you see an error, double click on it and see what the description is.

Please post the error code/s found in the Event column and the descriptions back in this topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Look in the Device Manager to see if there are any errors (red X) or warnings (yellow question mark).

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Device Manager.

I'd check the CPU temperature...looking at fans is only one possible indicator of overheating issues. You can check it by going into the BIOS or by using various software programs.

How to get into your computer's BIOS - http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-...enter-BIOS.html

Heat-related crashes never leave any visible history...they just happen and the user must recognize them for what they are.

I used speed fan to check the temperatures, and they were about mid 40s to 50s, so i gave the fans a clean. That resolved half of the crashes but i still have the problem with the computer hanging or crashing while trying to read or burn a disc. ive checked for possible firmware updates, which there were none, tried un-installing and re-installing nero, tried a different program (cloneDVD), un-installing dvd drive and re-installing it, checked all cables to see if they were in properly which they were so im stuck on ideas on what it could be. when it hangs and locks up the pc, it can get up to about 70% completion and when it crashes it does about 1%. this happened to me before which i bought a new dvd drive and it fixed it but when in another computer it was fine (the old one i have) so maybe this is an internal problem?

About the only thing I can think of...is to try burning at a slower speed.

I'm totally nonplussed that the drive crashes when attempting to read a disk.

Same behavior for both CDs and DVDs?
