Hi theshermans and welcome to the BC forums. Let's start by doing the following.

Please download the Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool. You must have administrative rights. Follow the steps below to run the tool:
  • Close all the running programs.
  • If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, disconnect the computer from the network and the Internet.
  • Locate the file that you just downloaded.
  • Double-click the FixVundo.exe file to start the removal tool.
  • Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.
Important: Do not launch any new applications while the tool is running.

When the scan is done:
  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.
  • If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, reconnect the computer to the network or to the Internet connection and reboot your computer.
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGITIMATE AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hello again theshermans. We have our work cut out for us here so let's get started. We will need to remove the vundo infection manually. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Please download Process Explorer by Sysinternals and unzip it to your desktop.

Also download Killbox by Option^Explicit and unzip it to your desktop.

Step #2

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

Save the document to your desktop as fixvundo.reg and close Notepad.

Step #3

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Make sure you have printed out these instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate procexp.exe on your desktop and double-click it to start Process Explorer.

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of cps.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the cps.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or .bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well.

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of cps.dll then click the kill button.

Again, if you see any .ini or .bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - D:\WINDOWS\addins\cps.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cps - D:\WINDOWS\addins\cps.dll

Close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Now locate the fixvundo.reg file on your desktop and right-click on it. Choose Merge and answer Yes or Ok if you get any other prompts.

Step #4

Double-click on KillBox.exe to start the program.
  • Click Delete on Reboot.
  • Paste the line below into the top Full Path of File to Delete box.
    • D:\WINDOWS\addins\cps.dll
  • Click the Delete File button which looks like a stop sign.
  • Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
  • Click Yes at the Delete next Reboot prompt.
  • If you get a PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process! message then just restart manually.
Step #5

After your computer reboots normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

YOU ARE A LEGEND AND A GENIUS!!!!!!

Thank you so much!!! I followed your instructions and everything worked fine. TO me, it appears as if the problem is solved (but I'll leave that final decision up to you after reviewing my HJT log below.

I have 2 questions for you:
1 - Is this VUNDO thing very widely spread or do you know of a particular culprit usually responsible for infecting PCs with it? (I only ask because I have had house guests and I am certain that this happened because of something they did or somewhere they visited and I would just like to know)
2 - What do you recommend as teh best protection against this (I run Mcafee and Ad-watch to keep an eye on the registry but this still got through!)

Many thanks again.
Kind regards
K

Hi theshermans. Well, I wish I could take credit for it but there are many people involved in coming up with these fixes and I am only one of them. As the infections become more involved it takes a group effort.

We have a couple of items to clean up but first I will try and answer your questions.

The Vundo infection is becoming more widespread. I've had a number of them to fix just this weekend. We have not yet established where it's coming from but there are always 3 main areas: Internet surfing, email and IM. Somewhere along the line either an infected website was visited and possibly a popup ws clicked on that triggered the installation. Or it could have come from an infected email either from a known or unknown source. Always a good idea not to open emails from unknown sources and highly suspect emails from known sources if they have attachments. Never open the attachment because that will bypass your antivirus. Always save it to your hard drive and then open it if you are sure that it is Ok. Better yet, just delete it and move on.

Ok, let's fix a couple of minor items that still need fixing.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [DELDIR0.EXE] "D:\DOCUME~1\THESHE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\DELDIR0.EXE" "D:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\"

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Download CCleaner and install it. Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Ok, that's it! Easy this time huh? Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in. Then I will have a number of suggestions for free applications to help protect your computer from attack and to keep it in tip top shape.

Cheers.

Hi theshermans. Now that is a good looking log. Great job! How are things running? Any problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
