For about a week I have been having trouble with browsing - more often than not I have to refresh or retry to view a web page (no particular ones) - getting "Internet cannot display webpage" messages. I tried downloading and using Firefox - same thing, same frequency. We have two computers on the network, both with the same problem - one runs on XP, the other Vista. Both have Windows Firewall, one is wired in to a Micronet router, the other is connected to it wirelessly. I have about 8 email accounts I check with Outlook Express - more often than not it fails to connect with one or two of the accounts so I thought the problem may lie with my broadband provider - Onetel. They talked me through various re-setting & deleting things and said it wasn't them.
On the XP (not wireless) computer I have updated and used (the free versions of):
Adaware
AVG
Spybot S &D
Panda
CCleaner
and CleanUp!
Most ofthem more than once, and not necesarily in that order. It's a hard problem to search for a solution to!
Any assistance gratefully received - it's not a nightmare of a problem but it is becoming more and more aggravating!

Hello Ajax and welcome to BC.

The event viewer may give some more information.

1. Click Start select run
2. Type eventvwr.exe
3. Press enter
4. Search through the groups for errors and warnings.
5. Double click on each error and or warning.
6. Locate the copy to clipboard button, Posted Image (under the two arrows)

Thanks for your response... since my original post I have used House Call - it found troj_fakeav.hp - and disinfected it by deleting, then suggested I scan again. Did this, no problems found but when I went online - same old problem. That being said when I restarted the computer and came online just now, so far no problems...
On the wireless laptop with vista, housecall is still running, but has not found a trojan, but has found various threats - MS07-25, MS07-36 etc...
I will now do ask you asked!
Thanks...

Thats good to hear
What are the specs of the laptop? CPU RAM etc most of those errors are application hangs which could be down to system resources.

Also what security products are you using on the systems?

Here are some free online virus scanners that can be used in the same way as housecall.

1.Eset
2.Kaspersky
3.Bitdefender
4.Panda
5.McAfee
Regards,

Alan.

aHHHHHHHHHH!
Still having to refresh most pages on desktop, so eitherthat trojan wasn't the problem, or there is another... Still with the desktop I have AVG 8 (free) running all the time - I did have Spamihilator.. but that doesn't seem to be working propoerly now, I have the standard Windows firewall and whatever firewall is in the micronet router....

BAck to the laptop, I reran Housecall and it found the vulnerabilities properly - within Excel, requiring a security update - but no Malware found. I tried running Bitdefender and evetually got it to start but afterabout an hour itwas telling me itwouldtake another 7 hourse so I stopped and used House Call.

Do you think it's a bug in the machine or a Firewall thing? But why would a Firewall thing start willy-nilly; and why would a bug get both ourmachines at once?! I LOVE I.T.!!!

Thanks for being there...

No problem, glad to help.

It could be a number of things, but to start with it could be malware related. I would start with following the instructions at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

Alan.
