I am running Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2 and just recently discovered that a program named Project1 is running as soon as I startup. If I use the task manager to end this program, I am not able to connect to the internet.

I've been reading different forums about how to get rid of it, but I'm confused as to what to do.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I was not able to restart my computer in safe mode using F8. I tried several times without success.

Instead, I used MSCONFIG to come up in safe mode. I started the complete system scan using superantispyware and it ran for about 5 minutes before my computer restarted and came back up in safe mode. I once again started the complete system scan and it ran for 15-20 minutes (finding 166 file problems - Adware Tracking Cookies) before my computer restarted again and came up in safe mode.

I restarted the computer in normal mode so that I could post this reply. I'm going to try again to restart in safe mode and run the complete scan. I let you know if I'm successful.

Almost done..

Please update and rerun MalwareBytes. Then...

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

The Kaspersky Online Scanner has been running for 8 1/2 hours and still going. Does that sound about right?

Update: I see now that it is not scanning although running, so I'm going to restart the scan. It only scanned 3700 files before it stopped.

No problem. If it will not complete the scan, let me know. We can use an alternative.

Your Datakeeper backup files are infected. I don't know this product. Can you delete those files flagged by the scan? Also, can you tell me what SolarWinds is?

Can you submit this file ( C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Free Tools\TFTP-Server.exe ) to Jotti's malware scan . Please post the report you receive on it.
