My computer has been running poorly for a few months. Hard to explain...several errors, freezes up, etc. If you see anything unusual here, please let me know.

Hi jsmith_15, Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

I have a number of steps for you to complete, please take your time and if you have any problems just ask.

Before we start, I see that you have Spyware Doctor installed - Does your version have anti virus software built in. IF NOT then start at step #1. If it has then start at Step #2

Step #1
If no anti virus software installed. Please install and update one of the free versions listed below - IMPORTANT only have one anti virus installed on your computer. Uninstall your current product prior to installing new.
Step #2
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #3
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Step #4
The below line would indicate that you have the programme Smart Money installed;
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\S-MONEY\CASM2ALR.EXE
Did you download this programme and do you still use it? Please let me know.

Step #5
Finally, please post back the following in logs;
  • Kaspersky log
  • Both logs created by random/random RSIT
  • If you download/use Smart Money
  • How you computer is running

I don't have the antivirus engine installed for spyware doctor. I have the free version running. However, I do have Zone Alarm antivirus software running on my computer. Do I need to disable it, uninstall it, or leave it alone? If I uninstall, does that mean I should not install it at a later time?

Hi JSmith

As long as you have anti virus software installed upon your machine and it's up to date that's all that matters.

Please continue with the rest of the instructions.

#4 SMART MONEY IS A PROGRAM I DO USE. IT IS A PRETTY OLD VERSION, BUT I USE IT REGULARLY. IF IT IS A PROBLEM, I CAN DO WITHOUT IT.

#5 IF I LEAVE THE COMPUTER IDLE FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN COME BACK, THE SCREEN FREEZES FOR A COUPLE MINUTES BEFORE I CAN USE IT. I DID CHANGE A COUPLE SETTINGS IN MY INTERNET, THAT WERE CHANGED BY SOMETHING OR SOMEONE AND THAT HAS HELPED WITH PAGE DOWNLOADS. LET ME KNOW IF ANYTHING ELSE CAN BE DONE. THANKS.

Hi JSmith,

Thank you for following my instructions so far, we still have a few things to undertake so hang on in there.

Step #1
Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Limewire). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

I would suggest that you unistall this programme - details are available below in relation to removal via add/remove in the control panel.

Step #2
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Add Remove - Control Panel

Click "Start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Limewire

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

Step #3
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step #4
Click HERE to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
You will be presented with a Menu.
Type 1, then press Enter.
FindAWF tool will begin scanning.
It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
When the scan is finished, a text file in notepad called AWF.txt will automatically open.
Return to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

Step #5
Finally Post back the AWF.txt file
Also confirm if you have uninstalled Limewire and Viewpoint products

Okay, below is the text file you requested. I did uninstall the Viewpoint media player, but could not find limewire in the add/remove programs. I ran a search and found it, so I deleted the files using cleanslate. I did the same with Bearshare as well.

Hellojsmith 15, The Gorilla was called out of town on business and will not return until sometime Friday. I can go ahead and start helping you in his place if you would like or you can wait for his return. You do not have to switch helpers if you do not wish to.

Let me know as I will have to look over the thread to get myself up to speed on what is going on.

Thanks,

It doesn't matter to me. I am in no huge hurry. I will be out of town from Friday-Sunday. However, whoever does help, let them know after doing all of the steps in my last post, my Firefox browser is not working properly. I can log into hotmail, but can't open any messages. Some pages load fine, others don't. Thanks.

Hi JSmith15

Once again sorry for the delay.

Thank you for following my instructions so far, let's proceed and start to clean up your computer.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

and

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

I am out of town right now and will be back tomorrow. I should add that my browsers are not working right at all now. I am afraid I may have done something during the last set of steps that made my computer worse. In firefox, several pages don't load correctly and if I am in hotmail, I get to the page with the messages, but when I click to read a message, it does not open the message. Internet Explorer just keeps searching for the website, and never gets there. However, when I go in as a user using as my wife, I can use both browsers just fine. The other problem is I am browsing, and then my computer freezes for 30 seconds, then goes to the link, then freezes, then goes to the next link, etc. Perhaps I'll try reinstalling the browsers after I go through your last set of steps. Thanks again.

I have tried the past couple of days to upload the files you listed to jotti and virustotal. They start to load, but each time, my connection times out, or the page does not load correctly, or my ISP which is Direcway says I lost signal. My service is only 200-300 at night so maybe the connection is too slow. I noticed on virustotal that they have an option to send the files by email. Should I try that?
