Hello there,

For almost a week, I have been encountering an issue with Google where search results open in a new tab as arbitrary sites, most commonly monstermarketplace.com. As I began researching the issue, I also discovered that malware solution sites such as bleepingcomputer.com all displayed a "Page Load Error" "Failed to Connect" regardless of whether I was using Firefox or IE.

My scans with Spybot and AdAware didn't bring up any unusual results, but my Avast scan (only when the archive files option was selected) did identify the following:
ERROR OCCURRED DURING MOVING FILE TO CHEST: THE OPERATION IS NOT SUPPORTED FOR THIS TYPE OF ARCHIVE
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\0.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\1.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\2.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\3.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\4.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\5.exe\MicroAV.exe Win32:Adware-gen (Adw)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\7.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
SUCCESSFULLY MOVED TO CHEST
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CHMKUZQY\file[1].exe Win32:Trojan-gen (Other)

A second Avast scan (this time done in Safe Mode and on "Thorough" level) confirmed the same:
ERROR OCCURRED DURING MOVING FILE TO CHEST: THE OPERATION IS NOT SUPPORTED FOR THIS TYPE OF ARCHIVE
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\0.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\1.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\2.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\3.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\4.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\5.exe\MicroAV.exe Win32:Adware-gen (Adw)
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5HUMMQG0\Uninstaller[1].exe\7.exe Win32:Frauder-F (Trj)

With the "show hidden files" option turned on, I attempted to navigate to the location to see if the files could be manually deleted, but reached a dead end when, after getting to the Local Settings folder, was only able to view folders named "Application Data", "Temp", and "Apps".

I'm not sure where to proceed from here, and would greatly appreciate insights or suggestions. Below are my Hijack This results...
Thanks so much!

Hi juffy,

I'm sorry it's taken so long for you to get a response!

With the "show hidden files" option turned on, I attempted to navigate to the location to see if the files could be manually deleted, but reached a dead end when, after getting to the Local Settings folder, was only able to view folders named "Application Data", "Temp", and "Apps".

The folder in which those files are located is a special folder and not easily accessible using Windows Explorer. Don't worry, we'll clean out anything bad in there during the course of cleaning.

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

hi Silver,

Thanks for the reply. Not to worry on the delay. I'm just happy to be (hopefully) making some progress!
I'm pasting both logs below...

Thanks so much.

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 7) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Add/Remove Programs

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

You have a website in your Trusted Zone. Any sites in the Trusted Zone are a security risk, so unless you need it to be there in order for the site to work then please remove it by checking this line:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://staplescanada.webprint.com

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi silver,

Thanks again for your time so far.

I went through the steps you've mapped out, but ran into a problem when I got to launching mbam-setup.exe. When I double-click on the desktop icon, I get the "Do you want to run this file" as usual. If I click Run, that prompt window disappears, but no installation screen opens. The Windows Task Manager does show that mbam-setup.exe is a running process, however. I've tried to also install via Add or Remove Programs, and have restarted several times with no difference.

Is there something I've overlooked?

In case it's somehow related, maybe I should mention that I had to download the install file (ver 1.28) from download.com, rather than from the link you provided. This was necessary because, in addition to the bleepingcomputer domain and many others of the same nature, the link you provided is somehow being blocked by whatever's on my system (whether using IE, Firefox, or Chrome).

Where to go from here?

Thanks!

Hi again...

I just tried renaming the exe and it allowed me to install the program. I now have the scan running and will post the logs when complete.

Thanks

Hi juffy,

Smart move with MBAM  I'm glad you got it working.
Unfortunately the upload didn't work as expected, please try this:

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c echo f | xcopy "C:\WINDOWS\system32\windows_update.exe" "%userprofile%\desktop\windows_update.vir" /h

A new file called windows_update.vir will hopefully appear on your Desktop, please upload it as follows:

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-mal....php?channel=32
Press the Browse button, browse to and select windows_update.vir on your Desktop, then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

Once the upload is complete, please delete windows_update.vir

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please click this link to open Kaspersky Online Scanner:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html

Press on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Click on the Save Report As... button.
  • Change the file type to Text file (*.txt), type a filename such as kaspersky and save it to your Desktop
  • Post the contents of the report in your next response.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Gmer report, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi silver:

Great news! For the first time in two weeks, I've finally been able to actually visit the bleepingcomputer domain on my computer. So, this means I can now follow your original directions to upload windows_update.exe (whereas before I had to try some ridiculous workaround since the page you'd linked wouldn't load on this computer).

I'll next post the Gmer and Kaspersky logs for you.

Thanks again for sticking with this...

J.

Hi juffy,

I'm glad that the domain issue has improved, but unfortunately the machine is still infected so please bear with me.
When you executed the command in my previous post, did windows_update.vir appear on the Desktop? Did you have any difficulty with the instructions?

Download and run ComboFix
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.  It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you - please now make sure your antivirus program has been re-enabled.
Once complete, please post the ComboFix report along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi there,

I did re-upload windows_update.exe earlier today, and just a few hours ago uploaded windows_update.vir. I hope that one of those was successful..?

As you've requested, here is the combofix log:

Hi juffy,

I did re-upload windows_update.exe earlier today, and just a few hours ago uploaded windows_update.vir. I hope that one of those was successful..?

Yes I received notification of these and it wasn't successful - I don't think you did anything wrong, I expect something was preventing access. It has now been removed by ComboFix.

How is your machine running now? Any symptoms or problems?
