greetings, im a first-timer here. i have the annoying "topantispyware" virus which replaces my desktop with a black screen that says "warning..." and gives me pop ups that say my computer is at risk. i used to be able to change my desktop back to normal by unchecking a box on my desktop settings. my control panel no longer shows desktops settings as an option, and i am now stuck with the black warning screen....

when i start up i now also get an blue screen which says i have a "fatal error in IE at 0028:c0011e36 in vxd vmm(01) + 00010e36. caused by trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c" although this may be bogus since i am then directed to "Spyware iDoctor" , before finally arriving at the black desktop warning screen.

in any event, below is the latest HijackThis log...PLEASE HELP. many thanks in advance.

Hello litespeed and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SWPortal.html
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll
c:\wp.exe
c:\ied_s7.cab
c:\x.cab

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

hey, thanks oldtimer!
followed your instructions (thank you very much, my wife is much happier now). i no longer have the annoying yellow icon and pop ups.

however, i still have the black "warning" screen which has replaced my desktop wallpaper. as noted before, normally i just went into control panel and unchecked a box, but this option no longer appears.

also, i still get the blue screen when i start up...this is the one that says "a fatal error has occured..." as described before.

noticed on the below latest hijackthis logfile (performed in normal vice safeboot mode), that some of the items you told me to check are still there...the R1 items for instance.

finally, is "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe" something to be concerned about. i recall this was a popup when i was having all the problems.....

thanks again in advance!!!!

Hi litespeed. things are looking better now. Let's see if we can clean up the rest.

To begin, Security iGuard is considered a rogue application that returns false poitives, badgers users into purchsing it, has affiliations with dubious corporations and the list goes on. I recommend that you remove it by using:

Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
Security iGuard
Now let's begin.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disk Keeper] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{7843BF6C-5B32-47C1-A2AF-72F338556CBF}\SECURITY.EXE

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{7843BF6C-5B32-47C1-A2AF-72F338556CBF}\ <--folder

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

If needed, start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode just stay in Safe Mode until I tell you to reboot normally.

Step #3

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #4

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #5

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #6

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi litespeed. I see that our security.exe is still hanging around so let's check for something hidden. Please do the following.

Download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi litespeed. Well, that didn't show me what I wanted to see. Let's just try removing the last item manually again. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Disk Keeper] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{7843BF6C-5B32-47C1-A2AF-72F338556CBF}\SECURITY.EXE

  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{7843BF6C-5B32-47C1-A2AF-72F338556CBF}\ <--folder
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi litespeed. Yes, we deleted that file before and it is now back. Let's delete it again.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Startpagina = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SWPortal.html
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Close hijackThis and delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SWPortal.htm. If you get an error while trying to delete it then reboot into Safe Mode and delete it from there.

Now let's look at your dekstop. Please do the following:1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
Uncheck all checkboxes in this tab and click the Apply button and then the Ok button.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

hey old timer, thanks as always for your speedy/helpful replies. below is latest HJT after following your instructions above to remove SWPortal.html.

regarding the blue screen "a fatal error has occured..." i was getting during start up, i found a bitmap file "wp" origin: c:\ while searchning my local disk. opened it and voila it was the blue screen. deleted it and its now gone!

regarding the black "warning" wallpaper that has hijacked my desk top, i found it also. did a search for "desktop" on my hard drive. it was an html file, origin: web. so thats gone now, too! now i just have a blank white screen as my desktop, which is still not ideal but better than the warning screen.

the one problem that still remains is my desktop tab is missing so i can't change my wallpaper from the blank white screen. when i open display properties the only tab options i have are screen saver and settings. i used to have a desktop tab and was able to uncheck the web tab, when all this mess started, which would temporarily remove the black warning screen (for about a week) and gave me back my wallpaper. please help with this final problem. is there anyway to restore my desktop tab?

thanks

Hi litespeed. Your log is now clean. Good job! Now let's see if we can't repair your desktop.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

Save the document to your desktop as fixdesk.reg and close Notepad. Locate the fixdesk.reg file on your desktop and double-click on it. Answer Yes or Ok when it asks you if you want to merge the data and then reboot.

After the reboot, right click on an empty portion of your desktop and click on Properties. Then click on Desktop and then Advanced and then Web. Remove anything there and then change your desktop.

Let me know what happens and then we'll finish things up.

Cheers.

hey OT,
thanks for your latest. followed your instructions. when i right clicked on my desk top (after copying/pasting the above quotebox contents and rebooting), there was no properties option or desktop, advanced, web tabs. the only tab i get is "general" and it says

not available
protocol: file protocol
type: html directory
address: file://c:\windows\web\desktop.html

(assume when i saved the quotebox text it was supposed to be saved as ansi encoding...this was the default choice)

good news though. when i go to "my computer", "control panel", "appearances and themes" i have "change desktop background" as an option again!! but as described above there is no customized option. i was able to scroll through the desktop wallpaper options (which are also finally back) but it does not replace my white screen when checked. ...almost there.

look forward to your response. and thanks again for you help thus far.

Hi litespeed. Delete this file:c:\windows\web\desktop.html
and then reboot your machine (you might have to go into Safe Mode to delete it). Then double-click on the fixreg.reg file again and re-merge it. Reboot again and then try right-clicking again.

OT,
still no dice. found the file c\windows\web\desktop.html, deleted it (sent it to the recycle bin), followed the remaining instructions, but still the white background. when i right click on desktop still get the same general tab as described above....

oh, i can see my normal wallpaper now when i boot up and shut down, but only for a second before the white screen comes up (in the case of booting up).
