I have Media Access on my system and can't get rid of it, even though I've run SpyBot-SD and Ad-Aware as per the tutorials. After running them & rebooting and finding MA still there, I deleted the folder into my Recycle Bin, but it won't empty. Although I click to delete it under Add/Remove Programs, it won't go away that way either. Interestingly, when I rebooted again, it stayed in the Recycle bin and didn't return to the C:\ drive.

Below is my HJT log (even though only MediaAccK.exe is listed under O4, the MA folder also contains MediaAccess.exe and a DLL file). Any help that can be offered would be much appreciated.--SW

Hello scotch-writer

Welcome to Bleeping computer

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lipuv] C:\WINDOWS\lipuv.exe

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://appldnld.m7z.net/qtinstall.info.app...llInstaller.exe

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 192.188.72.18
...(Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\lipuv.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Download, install and run http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

-

For more information about using Cleanup! see http://home.comcast.net/~sgould4567/softwa...;here</a>

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Hello scotch-writer and welcome to the BC forums. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lipuv] C:\WINDOWS\lipuv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\PROGRAM FILES\MEDIA ACCESS\MediaAccK.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\lipuv.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MEDIA ACCESS\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Old Timer, many thanks for your help. It all seems to have gone well. Below is the new HJT log. Media Access is gone from the Recycle Bin and no folder left behind, and the same for lipuv.exe. It's quite a relief! Again many thanks!--SW

Hi scotch-writer. Glad to hear it. Your log is clean. Congratulations! Any more Problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • In the Hidden files section unselect Show all files.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus application like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and antivirus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
