The problem is most noticeable when running a web search, when clicking a result it redirects the browser to an ad site.

Installed Zone Alarm and saw a NetBios attempt come up several times, figured this might have been where it came from, TinyProxy also attempted to access the net, when I didn't allow it, I was unable to see a webpage on the browser but all stats and signs pointed to actually being connected to the site, I then allowed TinyProxy to access the net and was able to see all pages.

Have completed all prep steps, below is the original topic and HJT Log. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hello kevc19

Please disable the following service if present:
  • Click on Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press OK.
  • Click the "Extended tab" at the bottom to view all the info on your services.
  • Scroll down the list and find the service called Shell Hardware Detection.
  • When you find the service, double-click on it or right-click and choose "Properties".
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
  • Click "Apply", then "OK" and close any open windows.
Screenshot with an example of how to disable a service if needed.

Important! Please temporarily disable any anti-spyware programs you are using which are listed here (to include Teatimer) so they will not interfere with the entries we will be fixing in HijackThis.

Run HijackThis, and press "Scan." When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present): (Please be careful and do not check any other boxes)

O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: iehome.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat (User 'Default user')
O23 - Service: Shell Hardware Detection (ShellHWDetection) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\TinyProxy\TinyProxy.exe

After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked" to remove the entries you checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis.

Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on OTMoveIt3.exe to launch the program.
  • Copy the file(s)/folder(s) paths listed below - highlight everything in the quote box and press CTRL+C or right-click and choose Copy.

:Processes
TinyProxy.exe

:Services
ShellHWDetection

:Files
C:\Program Files\TinyProxy

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the open text box labeled "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red MoveIt! button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will be displayed in the right-hand pane.
  • Highlight everything in the Results window (under the green bar), press CTRL+C or right-click, choose Copy, right-click again and Paste it in your next reply.
  • Click Exit when done.
  • A log of the results is automatically created and saved to C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles \mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log <- the date/time the tool was run.
-- Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot your computer in order to finish the move process. If asked to reboot, choose Yes. If not, reboot anyway.

Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTMoveIt is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders.

Reports/logs to post in your next reply:
* OTMoveIt log
* A fresh HijackThis log

That's good news.

Rescan again with MBAM (Quick Scan) in normal mode as you did in your other thread. However, before doing so please update the database. Update via the program's interface or manually download the updates and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

Then perform a full system scan with your anti-virus and let me know if anything else was detected.

When I updated the MBAM I had some problems and used your link, the update ran and installed but the Update Tab on MBAM does not reflect this new update. I'm gonna reboot now and try again. Below is the latest MBAM Log:

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

1203 appears to be the most current manual download, although updating via the program's interface should give you version 1222. I had problems with the download myself this morning so maybe the server is busy. Anyway that log looks clean.
