Hi. A couple days ago I noticed that my computer was running slow once every 20-30 seconds or so, then goes back to normal and happens again in 30 seconds. I believe it is a virus but my anti virus software was unable to find it (I have Norton 360 newest version). I have also noticed that when I plug in my USB drive, it won't recognize it until about 10 minutes go by. There is nothing in the Task Manager that says something is taking up lots of memory, as the system idle process is close to 100%. I have ran mutiple virus scanners and malware scanners, which didn't find the problem.

I don't know how to find this virus and how to delete it! Please help. HiJackThis Log is below:

Hello pozman21,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

The virus still seems to be on my computer.

Can you tell me what's detecting this, and the exact path? Neither of those logs is showing anything, so I need all the info from you I can get. I can't see what you see in front of you.

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Thanks,
tea

I'll try to explain this the best I can. What I'm seeing in front of me, even as I type this post, there is a typing delay. I type something, and the computer is slow to recognize it. It seems to happen more now than a couple weeks ago. Its seems as if something taking up a lot of memory is running, but I checked the task manager, and nothing is taking a lot of memory. The typing delay is really bad. This also affects when I watch streaming video's online. The problem happens in all applications on my computer.

At first I thought this was a virus, but now I'm not sure. I just finished reformatting my computer, and the problem still seems to be there.

That is all I know, I wish I can be more helpful. Do you know what I can do or what is causing this?

Is everything exactly the way it was before you reformatted? Is this a totally clean install? Maybe one or more of your programs doesn't play well with others? The only thing I know to tell you, if that's the case, is to disable your programs with msconfig, then re enable them one by one until you come upon the problem.

That's really all I know to tell you, since malware is my forte. Beyond pretty basic troubleshooting, and I really should send you to the Windows OS forum. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/

Please let me know how you come out.

tea

Teacup, you are amazing. I did what you recommended, which was go to msconfig. Then I went to Services and found out what has been my problem this past week. It was called "Ati Hotkey Poller" which ATI Technologies, Inc. manufactured.

Thank you so much, this is such a relief.

You are most welcome my friend. It usually is something pretty easy, but it can be like finding a needle in a haystack. I'm so glad that was it. :)

Take care!
