Hi I'm running windows vista home premium.

my problem is that:

A.)When i try to record with Audacity, i cant because even though i've got something plugged into either the mic, rear mic, or line it, it wont find it. Now, i've looked in my audio settings and when i plug into one of those spots the computer says its working and enabled.

B.)I seem to get the feeling my computer isn't recognizing my audio card (maybe im paranoid) but when i goto device manager and i goto audio all i see is the sigma tel CODEC. I dont see like a sound card or anything.

I've also noticed that in my audio settings it doesnt find any sound cards, just the sigma tel codec, is that supposed to happen?
Based on what the dell driver website says i've got a sigma tel hd audio major C driver something or other. but i've got a CODEC.

I've tried uninstalling the CODEC, installing the DRIVER but then the CODEC just comes back. it's quite odd.

I dont really understand what a CODEC is anyway.

If anyone can help me out here that would be really appreciated.

***** This computer was upgraded from XP Media Center to Vista Home Premium and when it was in XP Media Center the sound / recording was PERFECT.

also this is a dell C521.

The codec is for high definition audio. From what I found, certain Dells are having problems with the Sigmatel codec and Service Pack 1
I'm still looking for patches

I uninstalled the Codec from Programs and everything then rebooted. As the computer finished booting up it started installing "high definition audio device" which is working fine and ISNT the codec. so i'm going to leave it like this for a bit. the codec is no where to be found now thank god.

thanks for your help so far garmanma.

restarting fixes the problem temporarily.. then after a while it starts happening again.

Can you determine if the crackling is coming from the speakers themselves or through your recording?
When you turn up the volume with no music, do you hear interference? Is it the same with streaming audio, a recording and a Music CD?
What brand of speakers are we talking about?

There is no odd noises when i turn up the speakers with music not playing, it sounds fine nothing interfering. It IS the same .. streaming audio, videos.. anything that requires sound.. it crackles and lags when i change web site or pretty much do anything while its playing.

my speakers are the default one's that dell gave me with my machine.. they're Dell A525

You can get a decent set of 2.1 speaker sets between 50-100
You won't believe the difference. I spent 60 on my Logitech's and ZZ Top rattles the walls
