Hi I am on a somewhat limited budget and would like some advice on the hardware needed to build a Server using a PC running Linux. What sort of Motherboard and how much Ram would i need. I want to set up a domain with about seven Xp client machines.

I don't think it's very complex...mainly depends on what is wanted and what the true scope is.

All of my servers are frankensteined bits and pieces from various computers, and they all work great. Do you intend on using the server as a gateway then?
