Networkmeter Gadget Blips

I have a network meter on my vista sidebar there are regular blips on it even when i,m not connected to the internet. I have scanned with spybot and windows defender both say i'm clear so what are the blips on the network meter?

Could be broadcasts sent to your router to say I am still here do not release my lease or to your modem. Also keep alive packets to web applications such as forums.

If you monitor your internet connection you'll find that there's things that constantly check for updated content. The problem is in finding out what it is. For example, I have the Boston RedSox page open on my system - and it constantly checks for updates - to include linked sites that aren't obviously associated with the RedSox webpage.

An independent virus scan would tell you if it's anything bad. (Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)
