My IE homepage keeps getting reset to about:blank and I have repeatedly clears a couple of trojans from my system. I finally found HijackThis after a web search, but I'm not sure what I need to do to clean my system.

Here's my HijackThis log:

Hello leesc_1998 and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll/sp.html#55135
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll/sp.html#55135
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll/sp.html#55135
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll/sp.html#55135
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll/sp.html#55135
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EE5C5E5D-1391-F15D-C214-27CF50897C22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msti32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msdn.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winja.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winja.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcjq32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcjq32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [sdkdd32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkdd32.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

WinXP Show Hidden files/delete files

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\cuuoy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msti32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winja.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcjq32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkdd32.exe

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

If needed, start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode just stay in Safe Mode until I tell you to reboot.

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

I'll paste the latest HijackThis log below. Everything went fine until I ran CWShredder. After it ran for a few seconds I got a blue screen and the computer rebooted. The only thing I was able to read on the blue screen was that a problem had been detected. After the machine rebooted I got a Windows message that a sever problem had been detected and corrected.

Here is the latest log file:

Hi leesc_1998. Let's try using CWShredder in Safe Mode. Please do this:

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi leesc_1998. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

I see that you have an antivirus and firewall running but I do not see them in your log file. This can occur if you do not have them start on bootup but rather start them manually afterward. If this is not the case then you might want to check those 2 programs and verify that they are installed properly and working properly.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall and a good antivirus application like the ones you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and antivirus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Everything seems to be running fine as far as strange pop-ups and such, but my start page still resets to "about:blank", so I'm not sure what that's all about.

I'm not sure why my virus software and firewall don't show up because they both start at startup. I'm mostly just happy that the trojans have been dealt with. This is my work computer, so I have to be careful what I install. My helpdesk's solution to get rid of the trojan was to reimage my hard drive. That would have been a royal pain, so I really appreciate your help.

You're very welcome leesc_1998. I'm glad that we could help.

As for your IE startpage, it appears that your computer has restrictions placed on teh IE settings. This may have been done by your network administrator and will will disallow and changes made by you to the various IE settings. Talk to your administrator regarding that issue.

Now that your issues have been resolved I will close this topic. If you need it reopened for this same issue then please PM me. If you have any new issues in the future then please start a new topic.

Cheers.

Keep on computing!
