I received an email with a number of photo's attached. When I went to open the attachment I was asked if I wanted to
  • open with [browse] or
  • save to file
I clicked on the save to file option and the file was saved to my desktop. I now have an icon that I cannot remove. When I try and delete it an error message appears saying " Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk"
When I right click on the icon and then left click on Properties the file size is 0 bytes.
I am using Firefox as a web browser and Gmail for my email.
Any advice or assistance received that would enable me to remove this icon from my desktop would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Nonic

Try this application, it has worked well for me in the past.

To remove the icons on the desktop:
  • Right click on your empty desktop with all the windows closed.
  • Point the mouse to "Arrange Icons By".
  • Select "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard"
  • Click Next.
  • Put a checkmark next to the icons you want to clean and click Finish.

In order to keep it in the forum I quote your PM:

Hi there
Thank you for your prompt response. I have followed your advice and run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard. All of the desktop icons that were displayed by the Wizard were shortcuts. Unfortunately, the icon I am trying to delete is not a short cut. Any other advice would be appreciated

First try this:

Rightclick Show/Hide Icons (<) on the taskbar in the system notification area and select Show the Desktop. Again right click < and select Show Open Windows and see if the icon remains. Then try the next step.

To address desktop icon problem try this:
  • Right click on desktop and select Properties. Alternatively go to start, control panel, display.
  • Go to the Desktop tab.
  • click the "Customize Desktop" button.
  • Go to the web tab in the new window that comes up.
  • Uncheck everything you find there.
  • Also delete everything you can delete. There except for "desktop" OR "My Current Home Page" (which you won't be able to delete anyway).
