Hello all,

This is my first post here and I'd very much appreciate your advice.

I've got my parents PC in for a service as its running slowly. Here's what I've done so far.

Installed McAfee AV, scanned and removed every virus that was on there
Installed Microsoft AntiSpyware and removed every virus that was on there
Installled a2 squared and removed one occurance of malware
Installed all latest Microsoft updates, currently still on service pack 1
Run msconfig and stopped "suspect" programs from starting.

So. I'm fairly confident that the system is clean now. But is still seems sluggish

Ok its not the fastest of PC's but it was certainly faster than this, here is the spec:-

Intel Celeron 2.6ghz - 224mb ram

It seems to take quite a while (3-4 mins) from choosing the username at the menu screen on XP to actually being able to run anything. And even then it seems a bit slow to respond when you ask it to start something up like say... My Computer or whatever.

So, here is the hijackthis log, there's a lot of mention of yahoo on here, my parents like the BT Yahoo browser software that comes with it.

TIA

Hello GMANLS20, Welcome to BleepingComputer. You do have some issues, if you still need help, please follow these directions.

Run msconfig and stopped "suspect" programs from starting.

1) I do not see an indication that you are running Selective Startup in MSCONFIG. If you are I must see everything. Please enable all for the next log.

2) Since you know what you are doing, I will say nothing about the files sharing program: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\ares.exe" -h and only mention quickly C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\IMAPP.EXE
Incredimail: http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2002/2002-10-10.htm#6

3) You are running Beta Microsoft AntiSpyware and it will interfere with the work HJT has to do, these instructions will hopefully turn it off. Remember to turn it back on when finished.
To disable the program, follow the instructions below:
A.) Right click on the Microsoft Antispyware tray icon (a little red and yellow circle looking thing)
B.) Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
C.) Click on Disable Real-time Protection.

4) HJT needs a folder, create a new folder on the Desktop called HJT then move the HJT.exe and the logfile that should be there into that folder. Needed also to store backups for safety.

5) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
O2 - BHO: CDllBho Object - {5A5B6916-ED71-4531-8018-E792DD44156E} - C:\WINDOWS\dd.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {1803B9EF-9905-4F34-AFC4-05D1BAB28801} (RegUserCfgUI Class) - http://us.dl1.yimg.com/download.yahoo.com/..._1/yregucfg.cab
16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
-Adult Content Dialer
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
-Adult Content Dialer
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
-Adult Content Dialer
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Let's check to make sure no trojans are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks...pskelley
HJT Team

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
