Anyone know where I can find an audio driver for the ATI IXP SB400?
Fresh WinXP installation. Hard drive failed and replaced with a new one. Yes the sound worked before hand.
No device listed in device manager. No yellow exclamation or question marks. Nothing listed.
No sound installed listed in sounds and audio devices in the control panel.
I've tried various AC97, Conexant and Realtek drivers, both from the manufacturers website and driver sites using the software installer and by trying to force install the drivers.
If you need more information i'll be glad to post it here.

Did you reload the drivers from the motherboard CD?

I have been to the emachines website and tried both drivers. 1 for the 4605 and the ones for the 4620. The drivers for the 4620 solved some other driver issues. The audio drivers on the emachines website are the same for the 3 listed there.

There is no CD to reinstall the drivers from. This laptop was bought used and they didn't have any discs, or if they did I didn't receive them.

They way I understand it is that there is no actual physical sound card but a controller built into the SB400 chip. If i'm wrong please correct me but if i'm right then I need a compatible audio driver for the SB400.

The SB would seem to indicate it's a Sound Blaster chip, but there is zippo on their support site

I disassembled the laptop and found that the sound chip is a Conexant CX20468-31. I find the drivers needed and voila....Windows now sees that there is a modem and multimedia device. Great...so I get the modem to install but the sound still will not come in. Windows says that the device will not start. I'm starting to think this will make a good target at the practice range......

Did you check in the bios to see if the device is enabled?

There is no option in the BIOS to enable/disable the audio device. I am looking into updating the BIOS at this time and doing another fresh install but starting with WinXP SP1 just in the event that there is an issue with SP2 drivers and this laptop. What gets me is that the sound was working fine and the only hardware change was swapping HD's.
