I am new to bleepingcomputer forums. I am having this issue with my IE shortcuts and I don't know how to fix it. Everytime I go to click on a desktop shortcut that was created through Firefox or IE7 I get this line across the upper part of my screen and it freezes. Doesn't happen when the shortcut is for a folder in my computer (windows Media Player, Documents etc). Any suggestions. Thanks.

Which version of Internet Explorer is it? IE6? IE7?
If you right-click and look at properties, is everything alright?
How did you go about creating the shortcut?

Thanks for your reply! I have IE 7. I checked properties and everything seems fine. I am creating the shortcut by right clicking on the website and selecting create shortcut (IE) or deskcut (Firefox). When I click on the icon on the desktop it shows a big line across the screen and freezes up. I am at a loss. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It won't let me take a screen shot as the screen freezes up with the line across it. I can't right click and save the screen, the hour glass just keeps spinning. what are your Thoughts.

I took a picture of my Internet shortcut malfunction. Not sure that it tells you much. My son is the screen saver and you can see the line at the top of the screen where it is trying to go through to the website. Screen freezes up like this and only can ctrl, alt, del to get rid of it. See Pic attachment. Any Ideas. Attached File  Screen.jpg   75.73KB   28 downloads

Have you tried any of the basic cures for system problems?

Chkdsk /r, defragging, sfc /scannow?

Hello,

What are the specs of the system? CPU, RAM etc?

To start with the System File Checker, it may be able to help. http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

1. Click Start
2. Then run.
3. Type sfc /scannow
4. Press enter.
5. Follow the prompts

The SFC works by checking Windows system files and replacing the damaged files.

The event viewer may give some more information.

1. Click Start select run
2. Type eventvwr.exe
3. Press enter
4. Search through the groups for errors and warnings.
5. Double click on each error and or warning.
6. Locate the copy to clipboard button, Posted Image (under the two arrows)
7. Let us know what you find. (paste the results)
Regards,

Alan.

I tried to do the scannow now as you suggested. It got to 3/4 of the way through and asked me to put in the Windows XP CD. My computer did not come with that CD. Below is the two main application errors that are shown in the eventvwr.exe. REad below and tell me what you make of the results. Thanks

They are basically saying that Internet Explorer crashed at one point and also stalled.

Do you know what the System specs are? CPU, RAM etc. It could be that the system needs an upgrade

Are there any errors in the system group?
Regards,

Alan.

There is 2GB of Ram. How do I find out how much CPU. is that going to the task manager and checking out how much CPU is used. How do you upgrade the system. How do I check if there is any errors in the system. It's a dell 410 XPS, 1 Year old. Run's great, just have this issue with establishing shortcuts through the Internet. Thoughts.
