Can you give us a little more info, along the lines of:

What operating system?
What modem?
Did it connect in the past and just stopped recently?
Or is it a new modem?
etc

uhh.. im not pro at computers but il try

modem:
System Type: SpeedStream 4200-Series
Config Part #: 003-6190-G07
Firmware Part #: 004-D240-A6R
MAC Address: 00:18:D1:6F:0F:DE

computer:

System
Rating: 1.0 Windows experiece Index : Unrated
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00 GHz
Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB
System type: 32-bit Operating System

well the story was:
i had some fake windows security alert stuff and so googled how to get rid of it
and got all these spyware/trojan removal programs but it still didn't work
so i found SDFix and after a while.. i realised it didnt work on vista
so i googled what to do and some guy had the same problem with vissta and SDFix
and in a forum the replier said to download combofix
so i downloaded it and used it
but i dont think it worked
so i posted in the vista forum what to do
and someone said combofix wasnt meant to be used like that but he said to download mbam and use it and post the log
i used it and it worked and saved the log on my comp
and i restarted the computer and now it won't connect to the internet

You can try the following general fixes. However, these fixes are for XP, and I'm not sure if they work on Vista.

Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.

Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.

Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.
