Following a Virtumonde/smitfraud infection Ive managed to get my system "clean" and mostly restored. But some icons still stubbornly refuse to return to the start menu, Im missing the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Network Connections" and "Favourites" icons. As well as that when I go to Start Menu -> Properties -> Customise -> Advanced tab the only thing showing under "Start menu items" is "Set Program access and defaults".

Im currently running WinXP Pro with SP3 installed.

What Ive tried:

1. Anti-virus and malware scans
- AVG Free 8.0 - Clean
- Spybot S&D - Clean
- MWB Anti-Malware - Clean
- a-squared - Clean
- Blacklight RKR - Clean

2. Editing Group policies

- Set all relevant polices to disable - No effect
- Set all relevant policies to Not configured - No effect

3. Editing registry

- Downloaded registry patches - No effect
- Manually edited registy - No effect

Any help would be greatly appreciated

click start
then run and then type

sfc /scannow
and this will check the integrity of your system files. (you will need your windows cd)
i dont think that this will fix this issue but it has fixed similar issues for me in the past and is simple to do.

if that doesnt work try making a new profile and see if that profile has the same issue, if not you can then
migrate over your docs, favourites and email

otherwise a windows repair install should fix the problem

Tried sfc/scannow, but no joy with that. When I create a secondary account the icons themselves are there but all the options are still missing in the advanced tab.

looks like your primary profile is damaged,
if you know how i would try a windows repair (non-destructive),
if not ill look up some instructions for you
