I want to do a clean install of Ubuntu on an old Gateway GP7 550 Computer. The Hard Drive was wiped and re-formatted with nothing currently installed on it.
I have the Ubuntu Disk but its not recognised and wondered if it is capable of a clean install or is it only suitable to install as a programme within windows?

I would be grateful to receive some advice as I have no past experience of Ubuntu.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Did you have it installed inside windows (wubi style)? if so i'm pretty sure you need a different disk. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download then ya gotta burn it as an image, with something like IMGburn. And obviously make sure your BIOS is set to look at your cd/dvd drive first.

Wow, thanks for the fast response.

No, I was planning to do a clean install on its own as this is a spare PC.
They very kindly sent me a free disk "Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition.

I put it in the CD Rom Drive but as I say its not recognised even though the bios is set correctly to boot from there.

I'm not real sure man, the one they send out should be bootable. try seeing if you can boot from it on the computer you're posting on. While you're at it grab a different bootable disk and see if the computer you intend to install on will recognize it.

Put in the CD, reboot and hit F12 before it starts; your computer will start from the CD (it works like that for me).
