I have now a second machine that will not boot onto the desktop. It displays a screen with my user name and a box to click, which I do and won't do anything more after saying loading your personal settings. I am running WinXP SP1 in both machines with AVG as a AV program and Lavasoft and Spybot as antispyware programs.

I have tried running Safe mode on both machines but when prompted for an Admin password, the one I remember using doesn't work. I have also tried just clicking enter after selecting Admin, with no password, but no go.

Am I stuck with reinstalling windows after saving critical data on those drives?

I would say its time to reinstall, then apply all the updates from Windows Update.
