Apologize for the delay in response we get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having would appreciate you letting us know If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

ok... so, this wasn't as easy as it should've been...

first, I haven't changed the comp since first posting here - in fact, i have hardly turned it on.

second, I am unable to even access this site using the affected computer. I am replying using my work laptop. That being said, I couldn't even past the URL for the tools you mentioned into a browser to get to the sites. For the RSIT scanner - I had to download the .exe to a flash drive and put it on the affected comp. Then when I ran it I did get the log files, but when I tried to save them, Notepad experienced an error and shut down - so I couldn't save them (also a Dr. Watson's postmortem experienced an error??). I ran it in safe mode and it gave me one log file... I had to try it twice as again I received an error and Notepad and Dr. Waston's? experienced forced close.

Here is the one log file.

As for the online scanner, again, I can't even access the webpage - it just gives me a "Page Load Error".

Awaiting your advise.

Thanks!!!

If you can download this program with another comp and transfer it to the infected one, and run it.

Please download ComboFix.exe. Visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hello Again!

I had some troubles with this, but seemed to have outsmarted the damn rootkit!

Here's what happened.

I downloaded the ComboFix.exe and the XP PRO SP2 recovery console and put them on a flash. Took them from the flash to the infected desktop. I moved the console onto the ComboFix, saw a progress bar, then nothing. I tried to run ComboFix, saw a progress bar, then nothing. I tried running it from CMD prompt, and nothing still. As I couldn't go to the web browsers to try it from there, I went the Limewire internal browser, navigated to this posting, downloaded them both, and tried again. Still only a progress bar, then nothing. So, I just ran the ComboFix from it's location from the Limewire browser. This time, ComboFix came up saying a rootkit had been discovered and it reboot. Upon reboot, ComboFix proceeded to run. Below is the log - but first a note on symptoms. The system time is restored, Control Panel from the start menu is restored, .lnk icons are gone, so far, seems to work... though I'm sure there is some additional cleanup possibly necessary. Windows Genuine validation still not recognized... so far the only issue i can find.

Thanks for your help! I will wait your reply, in the meantime monitoring the status and symptoms to report if necessary...

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If you have trouble with the update process, please download the latest updates here.
  • Double-click the mbam-rules.exe file on your desktop and let it update the application.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart. (see extra note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

========

 wow! more amazing results! :) As soon as I ran MBAM Windows Genuine Advantage seemed to kick back on. Just one note, the link for GMER given wasn't valid, but I found it easy enough. Both logs below.

Thank you again for helping me clean this once seemingly hosed PC!!!

Gmer log is not complete..

Can you post all data inside the report?

This is all the data in the report per the instructions given for GMER... should I change some settings?

I ran it again, this time IE was open in the background... AVG is turned off while I do these because I typically see warnings against running an AV prog while doing scans.
