"Windows Me freez-up","Apr 26 2005, 08:48 AM","winston","My computer
keeps freezing-up. Some times the cursor freezes, some times it will
move but when I click on somethong nothing happens, sometimes when I shut
down, my monitor will turn off but my box won't. I'm at a lost,
nothing new has been done this just started happening within the last week or
so. I've run McAfee virus scan- nothing found. I've run Spy Bot -
nothing found. I've run Ad-Aware SE Personal - same results. My brother
who is much more computer literate then I says that it's a Microsoft
problem. Something about a problem between MS and McAfee running
together? I don't know. McAfee firewall & virus scan come free with
Verison DSL with MSN Premium. I've even tried a couple of different system
restore points with no results the same problem seems to plague me.
When looking for restore points I did find something strange
"Installed Hawiian Telcom DSL Instalation Task which ossured at 4:09am. I
have no idea what that was. All I know is I need some help!

I suggest you post a HijackThis log for examination.

Read the pinned post in the HijackThis forum, here
Please read, and follow, all directions carefully.

Then, run a log, and post it in the HJT forum, at this link. Do not, fix anything, yet.
A member, of the HJT Team, will help you out.
It may take a while to get a response, because the HJT Team are very busy. Please, be patient, these people are volunteers. They will help you out, as soon as possible.

NOTE:
Once you have made the post, please, DO NOT make another post in the HJT forum, until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The first thing they look for, when looking for logs to reply to, is 0 replies. If you make another post, there will be 1 reply. The team member, glancing over the replies, might assume someone is already helping you out, and will not respond. So, just make your post, and let it sit there, until a team member responds. This way you will be taken care of, in the most timely manner.

You made a good start by running your anti-virus and both Spybot and Ad-AwareSE; I presume you have also run scandisk and defragged. The next step is to post a HiJackThis! log to the correct forum here at BC, and let our volunteer team of experts review it and help you. It certainly seems like something got downloaded (assuming you don't live in Hawaii ) that suddenly caused your computer to act abnormally. The instuctions for using and posting a log are here:

I had similar problems when I first bought my 'puter from a pawn shop.

My tech kept saying it was a "ME" thing also.

I up-graded my ram, video card (I think this was the problem) and the processor from the "factory" components to after-market components.

It runs well now, every so often I still get the freeze-up and when I jiggle the mouse it will release the screen. I am using AVG and run AD-Aware, Spy-bot,
spywareblaster, that ALL come up clean.

btw, my tech says that jiggling the mouse does nothing to fix it. Before the upgrading I did the jiggle four times an hour, now its just once in a while.
We have re-formatted and installed ME fresh and the problem still arises occasionally. Good luck.
