Hello again,

So after following: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/ (awsome guide)

I discovered that my McAfee was not up to date, which is something that, well lets just say, makes me unhappy.

From the top
I disconected my computer from the internet and kept it off other then for updates
Ran Ad-Aware, removed a few problems, installed update, reran, removed problems, found out McAfee was being blocked in some way so I was not 100% updated (grrrrrr), ran a virus scan, removed a virus.

Ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot and McAfee again just to be sure - no problems so far
I did not download the free antivirus or McAfee Stinger, if this is still needed let me know.

One thing I did notice while doing immunization with SpyBot that it said 43 of my Plugins under Opera 7 were not protected, but there are two entries for Plugins both size 43. I am not sure if this is a SpyBot thing or something else.

Background:
(this is a repeat of my first post, with a few additions, which ended up under the Misplaced HijackThis logs section

I am running
Windows XP
McAfee Virus Scan
McAfee Firewall
SpyBurn (w. Tea Timer)
Ad-Aware

I check my msconfig often and only have 3 things load on Startup
Tea Timer, McAfee and setting for my video card

Symptoms
When using Google to search and clicking on the links it redirects me to random websites (both in Opera and IE)
Browsing and Google runs really slow
I cant access windowsupdate.microsoft.com
I cant access www.bleepingcomputers.com (grats guys they are scared of you, using my work laptop to post this)
There is also a shortcut on my desktop named Casino pointing to hxxp://casinofree2400.com
(I removed the target it was pointing to under system32, but the shortcut keeps poping up)

I am really hoping that McAfee got the cause of all this, but I thought I killed this thing before and I was wrong.

Here is my HijackThis Log:

Hello tufek22,

We will restore the default hosts file back onto your machine.

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running.
While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes.
So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

I download and ran everything but there were a few problems
HostsXpert pops up with an ERROR: Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\etc\hosts

Do you have Spybot lock your hosts file? If so, that would prevent it from being changed by HostXpert.

Open Spybot, go to mode> advanced> tools> IE tweaks> make sure you uncheck Lock Hosts File

Then follow the HostsXpert directions.

How is the computer running?

SpyBot was locking the host file, but even after I unchecked to box I keep getting the same error.

I have tried to uncheck the box and run HostsXpert,
uncheck the box close SpyBot, open SpyBot, make sure the box was unchecked and run HostsXpert,
Uncheck the box, run HostsXpert, click a different icon under tools

Every time I try to make the file writable it brings up the same error and checks the box under SpyBot.

As far as the computer is running I am not sure. I am keeping it disconnected from the net for the duration of the cleaning.

I also decided to run a deep scan using Malwarebytes and found a few more infected files. Here are the new logs:

Hi tufek22,

I dont see anything in your log so we will dig deeper.

Disable you McAfee antivirus before running Kapsersky Online Scanner.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized). info.txt can also be found at c:\RSIT\info.txt

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi tufek22,

Why do you have
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 9-
Java DB 10.3.1.4
Java SE Development Kit 6 Update 7

on this computer? Did you intentionaly download those? Are you a Java Developer?

And you have an old version of Spybot: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20

These old versions of Java can be uninstalled:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11-
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05-

Be sure to leave Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 7, as that is the latest version.

Are you a Java Developer?

yes, no, kind of.

yes, I intentionaly download those because I had to develop some tools in Java.

no, I havent worked on it for long, and not at in about last 6 months now.

so, all in all, kind of. Getting rid of it.

and honestly, who just downloads all of that just for kicks?

also, i am running SpyBot 1.6.0.3.1 right now. I think the 1.5... might still be on my computer somewhere.
The reason why things are everywhere is because I was in a bit of a rush to put it together and then I let my friend use it for 8 months. Bit of a mess.

I keep forgetting to mention that my misdirection problem has been fixed and browsing is a lot quicker. So at least the main source of my agrivation has been resolved. I just want to get this to a point where its clean so I can update to Service Pack 3.

A log of people get confused as to which version of Java to download, so they download the incorrect version. It see it all the time.

You forgot to uninstall the old version. It is still listed on your uninstall listing.

I have not gone through RSIT lising of files and registry keys yet. There are many so it take quite a while.

I am need to get some sleep, so we can continue tomorrow.

Hi tufek22,

I see some remenents of malware and want to be sure it is gone.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum.

-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe
