Please Help,
I am having some problems with pop-ups on my computer when I use my internet. The pop-ups range from cell phone ads, to ads titled aurora. I have pop-up blocker but it doesn't seem to help any. Also my McAfee Virus scan keeps alerting me of a virus, and it says that the virus has been cleaned and deleted, so I scan my files but it doesn't find any infected files. For example my McAfee security alerts me with: The FileC://Windows/system32/installer_marketing18.exe was infected by the Generic Downloader.aa virus and has been deleted to complete the process, clean files. Sometimes it says I was infected by a StartPage GW virus.
How do I get rid of these viruses and prevent sooo many pop-ups on the internet. Please help. Thank you soooo much!!!

Hi kris and welcome to the BC forums. We need a complete HijackThis (HJT) log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from here: HijackThis_sfx.exe. Double-click on the file you just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ directory by default.

Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your log when it comes in.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL I CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Hi kris. I see a number of infetions here that we have to deal with. With the ones I see it usually means there is a hidden one also that we will have to take care of. Let's check and see if it is present before we start the fix.

Download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi kris. Ok, we have our work cut out for us here so let's get started. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Download the Pocket Killbox and unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to your desktop.

Step #2

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the System Startup Service service and click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Repeat the above steps for the follwoing services:
    • WebSeach Toolbar support NT service
      WinTools for IE service
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste each line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key after each one:
    • sc delete SvcProc
      sc delete TBPSSvc
      sc delete WinToolsSvc
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #3

Locate Killbox.exe on your dekstop and double-click on it to start the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekzold.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\msclock32.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\msplock32.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\pacis.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\poker.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\psoft1.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ventura5.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\msjavwu.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wocsfc.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
      C:\windows\system32\cxdxregt.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssyszrd8.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdskpart.exe
      c:\windows\system32\zacmnq.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr51.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsyncmon.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsu138.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\pacis.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\Omrajd.exe
      C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\Wocsfc.exe

      C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
      C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe
  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there. If you get any messages regarding a file missing then remove that file from the list.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr51.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsyncmon.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsu138.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pacis.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Omrajd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\zxinst12.exe
C:\Program Files\VBouncer\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\ <--folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\ <--folder

Now search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.EGDACCESS_1058.dll
Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

Step #6

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #8

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives

      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin

      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi kris. Sometimes the online scans can take a while. It would be good to let them finish but let's try a different route. We still have a couple of the infections still present.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Now we need to remove a service.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the System Startup Service service and click the Stop button (that's Ok if it is already stopped).
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
    • sc delete SvcProc
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PaciSoft] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pacis.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [G3] C:\WINDOWS\system32\GSMedia3.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] rundll32.exe EGDACCESS_1058.dll,InstantAccess
O16 - DPF: {BFC9677B-8006-4336-9D49-2C797AEFCB9E} - http://akamai.downloadv3.com/binaries/EGDA...ESS_1058_XP.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\pacis.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\GSMedia3.exe

Now search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.EGDACCESS_1058.dll
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and start ewido. Click on the Scanner button. On the Scanner page click on My Computer and then click the Start button to begin the scan. Let it run to completion and fix anything that it finds.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi kris. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hi old timer..I did the recommended steps. Only thing..when I start up my computer I get a message saying: Error loading EGDACCESS_1058.dll, The specified module could not be found. And then it asks me to press OK. What does this mean? Also when I'm connected to the internet the ewido security keeps finding an infectected file. The infection is: Dialer.Generic. Then it tells me to reboot. Should I be concerned about this? Thanks so much for all your help!!

Hi kris. Post a new HijackThis log. You might have picked up something new.

Also post a StartupList by doing the following:

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Cheers.

Hi kris. You have reaquired this infection. It is can be coming from an infected infected site or a popup that is being clicked on. Let's clean it up again.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] rundll32.exe EGDACCESS_1058.dll,InstantAccess
O16 - DPF: {BFC9677B-8006-4336-9D49-2C797AEFCB9E} - http://akamai.downloadv3.com/binaries/EGDA...ESS_1058_XP.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Now reboot your computer to finish the fix.

Cheers.
