We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

In order to install the Recovery Console, I need my Windows CD which is not with me at present.

I will try to get my CD asap, but it might take a week. Once I am able to continue your directions I will post on here.

Thanks a lot again for your help.

You don't need the cd all you need is the file that you are instructed to download on the Combofix website.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • type in notepad in the Run Box then hit ok.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Soviet\lame.exe
Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{7892358c-cf05-11dc-8733-000fb00cf8bc}]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

When I tried that, the blue Combofix window displayed two instances of "cannot access file, file is being used by another process" shortly before the scan nearly completed. After notepad containing the log file displayed, the system froze, with .cfexe file starting with an 'h' (I don't remember the rest of it) taking up 99% of the processor. Should I try to scan again?

No instead do the following:

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Soviet\lame.exe
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{7892358c-cf05-11dc-8733-000fb00cf8bc}
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • OTMoveit2 will create a log of moved files in the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder. The log's name will appear as the date and time it was created, with the format mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Whenever I try to update the anti-malware program, it fails to connect to a server even though my Internet is fine. Should I still proceed with the above directions? I have already done the OTMoveit procedure.

That also doesn't work. Actually I have this same problem for my adaware program, so I load the def'n files manually.
