I had alot of viruses and spyware on this computer and used anti-malware program, hijackthis, spybot, adaware and AVG. I am confident that there are no spyware, malware or viruses lurking. I had uninstalled all programs and purchased McAfee to install and protect the system. McAfee installation sadi to uninstall the AVG Anti Virus Program. I went to add and remove - but it is not there - nothing in Add and Remove refers to AVG. By the way, I see the AVG Logo at the bottom right hand corner and I can click and even update the antivirus definitions - so it works. I am have a COMPAQ PRESARIO using WINDOWS XP MEDIA EDITION.

I have tried to reinstall a fresh copy of AVG and after I have selected the defaults it goes thru setup extraction and system status fine but when I accept the End User License Agreement it starts to install. Near the end it says ERROR and refers to a Registry Problem. I even tried to use their uninstaller I or remove AVG but I got "ERROR: Uninstallation is not possible. Product not installed." I also tried using MSCONFIG and took out references to AVG and tried to install but it too gave an error.

I just want to get rid of the AVG so I can give my friend his computer back Saturday. He cannot find the installation disks to his system also but it is a genuine Compaq computer.

I have added the Hijack Log results below. Any help in eradicating AVG is kindly appreciated! Also, I have noticed that when the computer boots up, there is a moment or two where the computer blanks out for a second and comes back up. If you see any other abnormal things in the hijack log please let me be aware of this as well. I hope you guys and gals can help me on this one!

Please visit the following link and use the instructions there to post a ComboFix log as a reply to this topic:

When following the instructions please install the Windows XP Recovery Console if you are using XP.

After running ComboFix, please post the ComboFix log as well as a brand new HijackThis as a reply to this topic.

Also for AVG, I was told by Abacus 7 to try this:

To Get Rid of the AVG Program, first download AVG Free8 and click to Install, you will get the Option to delete previous Programs. Click on that and it is gone! Just Exit after!

So install AVG Free8, have it remove the old versions, and then uninstall AVG Free 8 if you wish.
