I discovered today that my desktop had been infected with Antivirus XP 2008. So I ran AVG, Spyware Doctor, and Registry Mechanic. Both AVG and SD found and fixed several infections, including a couple trojans. RM found several dozen registry relate issues. After rebooting, I now get the Antivirus XP 2008 License Agreement on my desktop once windows completes booting up. The only way I can remove it is to go into Task Mgr and kill the application. The machine is running more irratic and slower than normal. I also disconnected from my network to ensure nothing new is coming in.

I'm at a loss on what to do now. Someone suggested running ComcoFix, but I'm not familiar with it.

I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thx
Ed

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.

Budapest,

Thanks for the help. I ran Malware and it found numerous infections. I also ran ATF Cleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, ComboFix and finally Kaspersky Online Scan.......which still found several infections, but there was no way to remove them in Kaspersky. Any ideas on what remains and how to remove?

I've included Logs for Malware, and ComboFix

thx
Ed

Please note the message text in blue at the top of this forum.

ComboFix logs should not to be posted outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member. It is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Further, you did not follow the required instructions for using ComboFix which are provided when the tool is used under proper supervision as its log indicates your machine does not have the Recovery Console installed.

You were not directed to use Combofix. Since you chose to use it on your own and post a log instead of following our instructions, we cannot continue in this forum.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". When you have done that, post your log ComboFix log and HijackThis log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts.
