I have seen this before, but usually removing the infection/malware also restores the Hosts file and resolves connection problems, but this time it's not happening.
After removing the virus/rogue program - system scans clean with AVG 8.0 and AVAST! as well as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware - all functions are restored except the ability to connect to antivirus vendor websites using a browser. The antivirus programs can perform updates, it's just the browsers that are effected - Firefox 3.x, IE 7.x, Netscape.
I took a quick look in the hosts file but did not see trendmicro, norton, symantec, or AVG listed.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
